Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

OK, there are many images here of PCBs:

DQI+II doesn’t seem to be among them, though

last resort, if someone on this forum has a copy of DQI+II and the appropriate screwdriver, they could tell you what battery it uses

I was hoping the info was available online already so I could order the screwdriver I need and the batteries at the same time, but if that’s not readily available, guess I won’t have much of a choice but to do one at a time

Maybe I’ll compile my own list from the games I open up :man_shrugging:

yeah like problyfine said, Trails in the Sky 1-3 and the two JP PSP exclusives (Zero no Kiseki and Ao no Kiseki) all use this engine as well. it’s a very charming engine!

Pretty sure so long as it physically fits inside you can just use CR2025 to replace the batteries for all Game Boy games. A CR2025 will fit most, probably all.

what are some good visual novels that arent like, about getting into a relationship with any character? i do not want a parasocial relationship with a cartoon

I mean it has a hanging out with people aspect, it’s just not a romance game. You get to know folks and encounter little horror vignettes in the context of a larger horror story.

But it’s definitely different from all the “Go on a date at bisexual blue skin twink high school!” type games, IMO.

Yeah, horror is the second-biggest visual novel genre so I suspect most of the examples will be there

It’s heavily straining the definition of visual novel but my first thought is World of Horror. Good stuff and no parasocial relationship aspect whatsoever

the abstract shitposting about When They Cry games has only gotten more widespread over the years so I assume the way they’re singularly dedicated to their insane logic is resonating with people who don’t necessarily need to have erotic fantasies about their cartoons

also just bought Gnosia yesterday and I’m pretty addicted even if I’m not wholly sure what I think about it yet, it’s a fascinating spin on a genre that’s usually all about building a pre-written linear relationship with a large portrait in the middle of your screen: very stat-based and AI-driven, a werewolf/mafia game on a spaceship (here’s free space for among us jokes) based on time loop mechanics which you keep manipulating to see all possible versions of events that can unfold. you’re slowly learning everyone’s behavior within systemic constraints and instead of using that knowledge to date them you’re using it so that they don’t bluff their way out of murdering someone in their sleep, it’s great

I also bought Gnosia and it’s very weird, I alternate between being highly engaged and bored out of my mind. It feels nothing like Phoenix Wright and Danganronpa, it’s barely a VN honestly. I feel like I’m going through text based RPG battles against people that could be allies or enemies

The weirdest / best part is having so little control over a game world in a single player game, I feel completely powerless all the time

I’m cautiously optimist and hope it will get more interesting as it gets more complex

Possibly Subsurface Circular? But maybe it’s a little too interactive to feel like a VN

Avoid 2 as your first entry. It’s pretty heavy and the controls aren’t immediately comfortable.

That said, I enjoy the PSX games quite a lot and I think they’re still worth jumping into.
