Post your Unique Retroarch Problems Here

thanks! I’m playing on a 1080 screen right now so I went with easymode, but will take a look at royale when I’m on my 1440 one. Looks good!

I always start with gtuv50 with specific settings, then go from there. works great for PSX and below imo, but tends to fall down on higher res games. here’s my setup:

definitely run the game at native res though for any CRT shaders.

An update based on debugging the meetup kusoge experience: make sure retroarch is only displaying on one screen, if its on both laptop and tv screen, the frame timings start to panic as it tries to match the refresh rates of both displays at once

And yeah, I advocate for gtu v050 because its such a minimal implementation of crt artifacts. Visually a good match for cheap or midrange crts

Does anyone have a launchbox forum’s account and can grab this shader pack for the rest of us?

try this link

I played with these for a bit and thought they were ok, but gave up on them as they don’t include slang versions and I had mostly moved over to Vulkan cores.

why would midi suddenly quit working in retroarch dosbox. mt32 games say “control rom” or whatnot not found, other games just crash. loading just the core and doing mixer /listmidi lists nothing.

if i save a shader as global preset, video goes black until i turn shaders off

love it

hi gamers please help

i’m currently halfway through a playthrough of panzer dragoon saga in bizhawk, because that’s the one saturn emulator that “just works” for me and i’ve generally had nightmare experiences with saturn in retroarch even when i’ve gotten it working (fickle performance, things suddenly breaking, saves disappearing, etc). i’m at the end of disc 2, on the screen that prompts a disc change to disc 3, but i can’t seem to advance to disc 3 in the saturn console menu; i can only go back and forth between discs 1 and 2 (the change discs button worked at the end of 1). all of the discs are in the m3u file, and disc 3 seems to run when loaded by itself, so i don’t think it’s corrupted (?). the other side is that i can’t seem to convert the saves to run in retroarch, so i can’t try that either. i sent everything i could think of to @anonymous last week and she had no luck - the saves didn’t work and gave “bad hash” when she tried to load them, even after sending her the original isos. i don’t know if i’ve fucked myself over by trying to play a multi-disc saturn game on a niche emulator mostly used for tool-assisted speedruns, but if i was able to switch from 1 to 2 then i don’t see why 2 to 3 would be impossible. i know this is a retroarch-specific thread, but does anyone have any suggestions or any help to offer? i don’t wanna lose this playthrough ;_;

also if there’s a different thread that’s more appropriate for this question mods please move it there

half my dos stuff doesn’t seem to run through retroarch anymore, even though it’ll work on older versions of the core. damn I love this shit

I use dev builds of dosbox-staging with reshade + crt shaders instead of going through retroarch now.

Has to be the dev builds because the variable framerate of vanilla dosbox does not play nice with reshade

all I got is in the logs the games that don’t run stop here

[INFO] Version of libretro API: 1
[INFO] Compiled against API: 1
[INFO] [Audio]: Set audio input rate to: 44100.00 Hz.
[INFO] [Video]: Video @ fullscreen
[INFO] [Vulkan]: Vulkan dynamic library loaded.

[INFO] [Vulkan]: Using GPU index 0.

the next line in the games that run is

[INFO] [Vulkan]: Using resolution 2560x1440

so some kind of resolution problem? even though the dosbox.conf files will be setup identically?

resetting didn’t work, at first, but now suddenly things that weren’t running are after trying again hours later. except a couple games run extremely slow or stay at a black screen instead of crashing. also general midi is not working properly, but mt32 is. even though before I reset general midi seemed fine in the games that did run and used it. I noticed many months ago when I suddenly got errors about the control rom for mt32 (guess I had to reinstall munt) not being found that the dos box core stopped showing anything if I typed mixer /listmidi in it. but when I ran an older version of the core it still showed omni midi and mt32. the games that hang at black screens seem to be the ones that use cd audio so it seems like we got some sound problems here

Once I tried running gabriel knight 2 through scummvm with reshade but unfortunately reshade reinitializes every time it plays a movie or goes back to the game screen which is constantly

I think this is a consequence of scummvm and reshade not playing nice together

wasted all day with this. finally figured out I had to set it to mididevice=win32 to get it to work like it did before instead of using it’s internal shit or whatever it’s doing now, except it doesn’t work like before because I can’t get a sc55 soundfont to work to save my life, nothing but adlib sounding shit all day no matter what settings I tried, their internal fluidsynth thing, external omnimidi, nothing. mt32 stuff worked though. cd audio I can’t for the life of me imagine what settings it’s needing for that to work. if I leave it blank in the config file so it uses default settings I still get nothing. I messed with dosbox-staging a bit and with that the cd audio worked fine without me having to do anything, like you’d think it would, but with mt32 the music worked but the sound effects were busted and sc55 was the same as the retroarch core, couldn’t get it working right at all. I don’t remember getting basic sound working with these game to be this difficult since windows xp. also 320x200 dos games are in a box in retroarch, in dosbox-staging they touch they edge of my screen, like I thought they were supposed to be doing at this resolution this whole time. so one of these is lying to me about accurately rendering the picture. and yet the true dos experience has never been so accurately emulated

320x200 games should be stretched out to a 4:3 ratio by whichever emulator you use, so whichever does that is the one with correct default behavior.

If you want, I can write out my whole ‘setting up a new dosbox-staging install’ process, since I’ve got it down to a formula now

they’re 4:3 in both but in retroarch they look like this

in standalone dosbox the picture touches the top and bottom of the screen, or close to it.

oh, if that’s not a consequence of integer scaling, it’s almost definitely a weird setting in your shaders.

If you’re using mega-bezel, those shaders are weird about how they scale images, so I’d go through those settings. I’ve had to do that before (which is why I stopped using mega-bezel and just switched to the main crt-shader they use under the hood, crt-guest-advanced)

think I got everything figured out. part of the problem was the couple of games I was focused on getting running first had their own unique problems going on, if I just tried some others things would of got going faster. gabriel knight 2 in retroarch, for some reason, just needed a lot more cpu cycles set for it? I just played through the entire game in retroarch like a year ago and it was fine, but everything was suddenly a lot slower though when I tried dosbox stuff recently. at first I was just getting a black screen in gk2 but then it started doing this

I also got separate config files for dosbox-staging so I can run things outside of retroarch now too. except out of all the games conquest of the longbow has some kind of sound problem that way. also the sc55 soundfont that is supposed to be a better one cause is was made from people working with the sc55 rom or whatnot sounds messed up in retroarch but fine through staging. at least everything is using the built in dosbox stuff now, so I don’t need omnimidi or anything anymore.

psx beetle hw core just doesn’t work anymore suddenly. try to load a game and retroarch crashes.
