HW is preferable even then, as it includes the full software renderer. If you set beetle psx hw to use the software renderer, it works exactly like the non-hw core but with a few useful options included and less problems with shaders.

Can’t use CHD files with the non-HW core.

Yeah my guess is the text box is actually a seperate rendering resolution than the game itself so not a problem on CRTs but HD displays are gonna freak themselves out.

Gut instinct might be to switch to fullscreen window mofe to see what happens versus fullscreen.

it’s not a separate resolution and has nothing to do with the display, it’s the way the framebuffer is emulated like tulpa said – makes perfect sense. this is definitely yet another way that retroarch is several percent more cockamamie than emulation from 20 years ago, upscaling behaviour normally shouldn’t change from moment to moment like that, but beetle is attempting to fall back to more faithful implementations in context, even though a solution like that is a lot more incomplete in practice (I noticed it when retouching the final battle dialogue of FFT a couple days ago, didn’t happen upstream ~9 months ago).

this is where my head was at at first and i am going to mess around with it before settling in one way or the other, but imo dqvii does get an awful lot of mileage out of an upscale

I think it is a very good solution for two particular setups of beetle psx hw: leaving everything at default, original resolution, etc (in which case there is no change in resolution and you get functional battle swirls and other framebuffer effects without any glitches) and using the supersampling (in which case you’ll only notice that polygonal models look worse but the resolution still remains consistent)

It’s only in the setup where you just up the internal resolution but don’t downsample afterwards where it looks egregious, in which case it should be turned off (and maybe they should leave it off by default since most people will play psx games at higher than vanilla resolutions)

i use xebra to play ps1 games in their native res, is there any reason for me to switch to anything else? speak english if possible cuz i dont understand computer, please!

xebra is really good, and if you’re comfortable using it there isn’t much of a reason to change. Its sound emulation is still imperfect but not enough to bother me.

I did not really like how quake enhanced looked, it seemed too bright and the low res mode didn’t look right either. looked more like 32x20 or something instead of 320x200. so I thought I would play quake through my setup in retroarch but fool that I was I updated retroarch beforehand and now for whatever reason the keyboard doesn’t seem to be functional anymore. I had it setup where I had to hold ctrl key to use retroarch’s hotkeys so I could press keyboard buttons normally for dos games that need it. the hot keys still work but using the keyboard in the game doesn’t register at all.

also the scummvm retroarch core doesn’t have any options for messing with the resolution so I can’t do the line doubling thing like I could for dosbox so nothing looks right, scanlines too visible etc, and I can’t just run those games in dosbox because for whatever reason none of my lucasarts adventure games have .exes. I guess when you pirate them nowadays they just expect you’ll be using scummvm

Maybe an RG 351V issue but I absolutely cannot unmap the hotkeys. Normally there are two options:

Hit start or enter to return it to the Auto-mapping
Hit Y or delete to unbind it entirely

Both of them return it to auto-mapping, essentially meaning that Y and Delete are redundant of Start and Enter.

Also! Editing the .cfg file for those keybinds to “nul” also returns them to the autobinding. I literally cannot unmap these.

Any ideas? Turning off “Autoconfig” did not change this behavior at all.

EDIT: Retroarch 1.9.4, can’t change versions because I don’t know how lol

this reminds me of when i was a kid, and one of my friends told me that he would “massage the keyboard” when he had technical issues with windows and it usually fixed it

I’m playing around with retroarch on my Xbox Series S and managed to make (some) saturn games work on it. However I have the wireless retrobit sega saturn controller and wondered if there’s a way I can get this thing to work on it? The instructions only mentions PS4/PC/Switch but there HAS to be a way… right?

Not sure if it’s unique, but audio popping issues in beetle-psx are plaguing my otherwise surprisingly decent psx emulation experience on a dual-core Celeron powered Acer netbook I bought nine years ago.

switch to beetle-psx-hw and set renderer to software, go through settings and make sure only ONE of vsync or framelimiting is on.

That should take care of the audio crackle problem (it comes from the emulator framerate not being stable)

I’m replaying RE2 through Beetle HW and I’m interested to slap a CRT filter on this. I’ve never done that before with RetroArch. Can someone hook me up with a nice one?

bring up the quick menu, go down to shaders, go to load, then shaders_slang, then crt. I like crt royale but you need a resolution at least larger than 1080p.
