Saw a double feature of Fitzcarraldo and Burden of Dreams today. I’m fond of the former, and the latter was formative when I studied documentary back in the day. Great movies. Seeing them back to back was a treat. You can really wallow in the intense parallels between the production of Fitzcarraldo and its plot.

The owner of the incredible (and now sadly closed) Sarasota independent video rental store Video Renaissance told me that one time Les Blank just randomly rolled up with a box of tapes of all his films and gave them to the store. King.

I once took a friend along to a double feature of Fitzcarraldo and Burden of Dreams and he didn’t stick around for the second movie because he is “not that interested in filmmaking.” I guess his frame of reference was promotional DVD making of featurettes. No, I said, it’s a famous documentary, arguably even better than the movie it’s about! I couldn’t convince him to stay. You fool… you fool…

Your friend will never have what it takes to push a steamship over a mountain.

seemed right to give the caligula re-edit a go
had forgotten how wacky the set design is
the sound design is godawful though, all these high-definition moody synth patches and lustful groans couldn’t be more tacked on if they literally had a protools rig in shot at all times, wtf were they thinking
old movies need to sound old!!

Watched The Hitman on netflix. It was a lovely little film that was part thriller, part romantic comedy. It’s written and directed by Richard Linklater, and unburdened by box office expectations or marketing that goes with it. It’s not great, but it was good, and I liked Linklater’s other stuff, and other things with Glen Powell, so I enjoyed it enough to recommend it here.

I saw Twisters in 4dx because the internet kept telling me it was good (AI marketing bots of the future are gonna fuck me up so bad).

I think the movie was not particularly interesting BUT the 4dx absolutely makes up for it in a big way. You will believe you’re in a mf tornado. The person sitting next to me had a bottle of Pepsi that got shaken up so much that when they opened it during the middle of the movie it exploded all over them. 10/10 experience.

Saw that new Alien movie. :eyes:

It is one of those annual ‘i need to watch La La Land again’-days today, and as always, it still makes me go  and :face_holding_back_tears: and i :zeldaheart: looooove it so, so much.

Hope that y’all have one movie in your life that can move you like that! :servbotsalute:

National Anthem is great

even though I downloaded it by accident thinking it was the Paul Walter Hauser / Sydney Sweeney movie that was also named National Anthem until they had to rename it for its forthcoming wide release…

I just went to Deadpool and Wolverine. I liked it! I liked its stupid jukebox soundtrack. I thought the fight scenes were cool and readable. I liked all the references. One was absolutely fantastic as a running joke.

I think the Deadpool movies operate on the same level of reality that I do that you can always be looking for a joke and simultaneously be sincere. It’s not the character being funny for the audience it is the character being funny for themselves.

So yeah I can relate to an incredible unkillable athelete assassin who also feels like they haven’t accomplished anything and hides it behind never ending jokes and honest sincerity that reads like a joke because of how often they do jokes. Deadpool really does just like his friends.

There are like 10 out of 50 too many blowjob references.

A positive 3 out of 5 Wolverines.

The Furiosa disc has some pretty good making-of features, one of which is just about the stowaway scene. That 15-minute scene took 78 shooting days.

Speaking of, finally got around to watching Furiosa. I was very “what why” when it got announced, but I was a fool to count George Miller out. Movie ruled.

It’s too bad we won’t have people fondly imitating Hemsworth’s Dementus like Hardy’s Bane. “Super whiny nasal villain” is such a wild choice but it works.

Also watched the Marvel the Shell movie, since that’s leaving Netflix soon. It’s cute. I dunno. I enjoyed the little YouTube shorts years ago, but that’s probably as much of the character as I needed, it doesn’t really work for over an hour.
