Movies You Watched Today: Youtube VHS Rip - Part 3 of XX

this is a cursed thought but it’s kind of uncanny how much showa-era godzilla mirrors the development of the mcu. i couldn’t stop thinking about it

I saw an odd movie last night, The Beast. It struck me as sort of a super artsy and less focused version of a Kazuo Ishiguro story. Deliberately disorienting, I guess to make you pay attention to its themes rather than trying to follow the narrative. Was it good? I’m not sure but it held my attention. Some striking visuals.

I thought about the first 2/3 of that really worked but the last third like, did not get them to the ending they wanted

New Alien movie was reasonably entertaining and had cool special effects but was, like many Alien sequels, risible. The space zoomers were completely uncharismatic, but I liked when one of them actually took a fucking phone call while tiptoeing through a room full of sound-activated monsters. True to life gen z moment!!

The fact that a top-5-screentime actor in this movie was just CGI of an actually dead actor is really fucked up, as many people have already pointed out. And completely unnecessary! The character was a random android! There was no reason it couldn’t just be a different, alive actor!

The friendly android randomly quoting a famous line from Aliens for no fucking reason at a pivotal moment was the corniest shit I’ve ever seen.

The manomorph at the end was, like, sort of fun, but also dumb as hell. Looked up a photo of the actor and he just LOOKS LIKE THAT IRL, which is scarier than anything in the movie.

The Boy and the Heron: Miyazaki shoulda stayed retired, I’ve had enough about children grieving. wasn’t grabbed by the animation or characters except Kiriko, tho her cigarette stick should have had more smoke

Saw Good One at MIFF last night. A girl goes on a hike with her divorced dad and his divorced dad friend. Pretty good!! That sort of sadness mixed with nature, like Old Joy or Leave No Trace. I feel like hiking films have gotta be the easiest films to get good shots for, though? Aim the camera at the tree and turn it on. I’m reminded of that old Jim Jarmusch quote about filming Dead Man. How they’d find amazing scenery and then turn their back on it and film the other way.

Saw Furiosa tonight. Everyone who said it was better than Fury Road was nuts, but it was still a good time. Shame there will never be another one.

watching Grace Kelly wave by wiggling her fingers while she mugs at the camera in Rear Window, understanding more about the kind of pervert Hitchcock was.

watched Into the Abyss on my lunch break.

weird movie to watch while snacking on fries.

still made me cry tho

Harsh but fair

some people forgot the ‘only pussy baby f slurs hide their forehead REAL MEN show it’ trend from like 2020 I guess

I wonder if there is a regional bias to these perceptions. I mean, sure he doesn’t have a mullet or a fade, but the hair is high enough to seem of this moment.

I only said no because of the tiktok forehead meme

Is it a good meme? I’ve never seen it. I could at it to my meme watchlist.

captain miller is the dumbest dhanush movie but it’s still acceptable

terrible writing partially saved by the acting

as usual the anti caste stuff is the keenest part of the movie

I’m watching Tron for the first time. The effects are now delightful. They’ve gone from cutting edge to primitive to Of An Era. The thing that has aged more poorly is it has the same plot as all 80s movies aimed at children: hostile business takeovers under false pretenses. I sure hope Jeff Bridges can prove he made those games! Even in Tron World the first guy you meet is like “I work in HR!” The insides of computer are like an office.
