VR SUCKS... or does it???

i got an index last year, its a lot of fun to use but it requires so much space to operate effectively that i dont get to use it often in my new tiny apartment space
honestly its not that bad though, there havent been any vr games out recently that look appealing to me, once half life alyx 2 or boneworks 2 comes out the gloves are back on

EDIT rather than double post: one thing that always ends up disappointing me when I play vr titles is how few accessiblity options there are for people with limited mobility, even in games that do have them such as Alyx leave a lot to be desired. Anything involving two arms is incredibly difficult, and im unable to reach behind my back w/ my right arm (drawing / holstering / putting items away) so i end up doing a lot more overhead repetitive motions with my left than id like to

in hindsight VR definitely seems like it heralded the era of hardware that’s only really worth buying in limited-run form (in this case over a short period of largesse wrt funded indie development and hardware subsidization, though I guess the mister was also popularized because intel was subsidizing the DE10), which is going to be increasingly weird wrt folks’ mental canon – who knows if the playdate will have some all-timers on it or if it’ll be remembered as slightly better than it is due to being as technically unplayable as like, planet harriers.

had some incredibly fun experiences with it! not necessarily expecting to have too many more – the slate of upcoming titles looks like a lot of watered down AAA stuff. would wholeheartedly recommend it if you can get in cheap!

wow I would totally get that bowling game if it were on PSVR. this long into its life there is still not a single bowling game for it! and yet multiple ping pongs

Sony’s giving it another shot, hopefully they throw budget behind a few more games. It’s weird to be in a place with an install base of maybe 20 million extremely active purchasers but with game expenses high enough that it needs subsidies like a ride-sharing company.

sympathies to anyone who needs to wear a headset hours a day for months and years on end, not a fate I’d wish on anyone, but I sure appreciate their work at the end

even the astro bot game on PS5 is like negative charming and cranked up way too precious compared to beholding the natural majesty of VR

oh interesting, I thought it was universally loved

You think that inheriting the Tearaway burden diminished them?

The best VR games are arcade games from a parallel dimension - light gun, cockpit, driving, etc. and those probably aren’t going anywhere

yeah this was my sprint vector revelation

Sorry if I’m asking a pointless question that simply ends with “no, stop trying” but a friend is mailing me an old Oculus Rift, including the controllers and two tracking stations. Is there ANY way to get out of using Facebook with this? The value of all this equipment is enough that I am not going to be looking a gift horse in the mouth, and if I have to, I have to, but IF there is a way to avoid the Zuckerberg Empire, I’d definitely like to…

no, they have a camera in your house now, enjoy great value

idk I was talking to a friend who owns one of the Facebook goggle devices from before the new Quest and he claims that he hasn’t had to log in to any Facebook stuff, yet… I know he doesn’t have a FB so it’s not like he’s just confused about being logged in or not.

it’s not just about login stuff, I cannot emphasize enough the degree to which you cannot trust any hardware that they have root level access to

it’s not just like “the NSA probably gets your search queries in functionally useless form if you run modern windows at all” stuff, facebook always invents insane new ways of violating your dignity. they will invent justifications for monitoring things no other corporation or government would ever think to collect.

If you already had an oculus account/device prior to the “you must use FB” deal, you’re grandfathered in, but only until 2024… though I suppose that’s ample time to move onto a different company that doesn’t enforce that shit.

I played 30 minutes of Moss and seeing the mouse for the first time almost made me cry from how cute it was.

Next January

You can continue using your Oculus account until January 2023, but you will not have access to social and some new and updated features. After that, full functionality will require a Facebook account.

Whatever “full functionality” means.

Unplug the headset and cameras when you’re not using it.

Here’s hoping Valve has a new HMD in the next six months

Maybe custom firmware for the Quests will be possible down the line

fwiw they’re not even letting employees stay off the integration

guess who found that out last year and was very mad about it

they wouldn’t even let me deactivate my personal fb account without giving me some weird vpn access issues, is it too much to ask to not have to have an account, I already work for you goddamnit
