videogame things you think about a lot (Part 1)

i think about starting a localization company to bring over shit that has no hope anymore like linda cube (fan translations for that are cursed), and how that wouldn’t be feasible at all and sorting out the logistics of it all would suck (not to mention would you have to recreate it from the ground up or would you be able to work with OG files and then run it through an emulator?), but maybe it’d survive long enough to at least get linda cube translated and released digitally.

cargodin, who headed last year’s napple tale project, is making excellent progress on their linda cube translation, alongside abarenbou princess

i didn’t know, the last i saw was some old thread on like, romhacking or something. nobody believes in a fucking webpage anymore so the internet is just a disjointed mess!

it’s like, i’ll gladly give these people hosting if they want a place to keep their projects and host their files.

(eta: i hate those wordpress-hosted blogs (for project stuff like this)!)

I have this theory that as ad execs and marketers got creative and editorial control over the things they were ostensibly only supposed to market, that signaled a grand political regression in all media, which throughout the 70s and 80s was gradually becoming slightly less white-male-centric, until with the help of marketers the white men closed ranks and pushed all the women and people of color out throughout the 90s and 00s. It’s especially obvious in comics and video games but I feel like it happened to all mainstream media all at once and the ascendance of marketers was a big part of that.

i remember reading how the people that Sega were using for their I think UK or US (or both?) marketing were trying to urge Sega against using the name “Dreamcast”.

This is actually exactly what happened to programming and computer science jobs in the 50s and 60s. Women were pushed out of computer science despite being dominant in the field and advertising/PR played a big role in this:

i got the breath of fire complete works artbook this week. though i know the series isn’t based on some non-videogame source material, there’s little things that almost make it feel like it is.

like how it has its own set of fantasy races that appear throughout the first 4 games, instead of using dwarves and elves and such.

i think about this game called perfect life about an upcoming apocalypse that can be stopped by either exploring dungeons and fighting enemies or solving puzzles and stuff, or you can just ignore that apocalypse shit and live day-to-day in the city as a normal person and send e-mails, get married/divorced, et cetera.

Have you ever seen him wear jeans?

Young Thug ひ was looking into the future.

I haven’t played Wing Commander 2 since probably 1992 or 1993 and haven’t watched a single second of it and couldn’t even really tell you much about the game at this point but literally for my entire life I’ve heard Jazz say “You Got it Maestro” in my head at least once a week. Every time I want to say some version of “you’ve got it” I have to consciously clip off saying “maestro” at the end. At this point I’m terrified to go find a voice sample and find out how mutated the sample has become in my brain over the course of 27 years.
