It’s probably been a year now, but I still think about the time a group of us played Fortnite and got wiped by a guy using the Batman Who Laughs skin with an Oakland Raiders hologram on its back.

Just insanely twisted.

Whenever I say “Oof” I often think of the sound Maruyama makes in Dynamite Headdy. Also how people tend to think Maruyama is a cat, but officially he’s a bear, and in his theme they have a voice clip in the background periodically say kuma (クマ) meaning “bear,” and I wonder if the developers did this to try to drive home the point that he’s a bear because maybe even during development some of the Treasure staff thought he was a cat at first.

i always figured that was the intent from his English name Trouble Bruin but like… hes totally a cat. you give a bear little round ears and a cat little pointy ears its well established visual language ya blew it Treasure

There is a quest in Borderlands 1 or 2 where you get a quest to go kill 40 of a specifically named animal. As you start killing them you get calls on your radio by the quest giver who has to keep renaming the animal, which changes their name on both their health bars and the quest tracker. The quest giver gets increasing agitated as he has to keep renaming the animal, and the names become more and more childishly vulgar.

I think this is the only good quest (i.e. talk to a guy, get a checklist, complete checklist for reward) in any videogame yet made.

That kinda makes me think of that achievement in Red Dead Redemption for killing all of the buffalo, which never respawn…much like real life…makes ya think…

Yeah i always thought he was a cat too, and always misheard the ‘maruyama’ voice clip from his theme song as ‘meow’ somehow

Haha that’s awesome. It’s great to hear anything as a meow IMO. For whatever reason though I have to admit that I don’t think I ever took him as anything but a bear…if I thought anything else at first I don’t recall it. I don’t think the idea of him being a cat occurred to me until I heard other people saying it. From the comments on this thread I must be in a tiny minority though. The whole set of historical circumstances is kind of hilarious and fascinating to me. In a way I kind of admire the position of Treasure, like, not opting to charge Maruyama’s design to be more traditionally bear-like during development just to hedge their bets, but just putting kuma in his theme to be like, “He’s bear OKAY.”

So the opposite of the Oregon Trail (games, not reality)?

theorizing on the meaning of madotsuki’s name on her fandom wiki page

It has been noted that when you reverse her romaji name (Madotuki in Kunrei-shiki romanization), it becomes Ikutodam: 行くと駄目 or 行くとダメ (“iku to dame”), a commonly used phrase that means “it is useless to go/leave.” This may be a coincidence.

I watched another film from Jun Ichikawa the other day called Song Of Gratitude which is easily one of his weakest without anything that made this, Bu Su or Tokyo Marigold so captivating (maybe Tony Takitani if your Murakami tolerance is high) but there’s one shot of a kid watching a trailer for a video game that I couldn’t put my finger on.

I lost a day trying to figure out what this was with the closest thing being that the white haired guy kinda looks like the dude from Tales Of Destiny (this was 2006 and Tales of VS wasn’t out for another 4 years) until a friend pointed out what this is from and I have even more questions now.

This is from a doujin fighter called Fate Axis that every review I can find online says is shit. There’s barely any videos of it and I could probably find an exe if I tried harder but I don’t want to. This raises more questions as I know the screenshots in no life king were make specifically for the movie (with Yuzo Koshiro music!) but for this:

  1. The clip is for a trailer evidenced by the CRUSH YOUR ENEMIES WITH A VARIETY OF COLLABORATIVE TECHNIQUES text.
  2. I cannot find any trailers for this game online at all, let alone gameplay
  3. This game came out four years before the movie did.

Then tried to work out what the chances were of this kid turning the TV on just as this already out of date doujin game trailer plays on prime time TV before giving myself a migraine.

First off what do I know, I like lots of trash garbage and music that has universal derision. It is wild to me that today I saw a middle school kid watching GTA Online highlights on the train when I was shocked to see middle school students watching GTA Online highlights six years ago. That game may be 20 years at this point. I am shocked how long of a life it has, and that large cities of people like watching other assholes play it. The kid today was just watching some guy play the game! Not even sick tricks. Or the best way to recreate a human tragedy.

As someone that did in fact put 200 hours into that game, watching someone just play it is alien and i can only read it as misery.
