“Nintendo” was probably meant as “the temple of free hanafuda.”

Aw rats.

Nice article with many good angles with over-interpretation in this topic. Brian Ashcraft has a correct entry point about the name of ‘Nintendo’, but like mostly history today, it never can confirmed the true origins . I can’t find my old draft, but this early story involves Tehonbiki, yakuza 会津小鉄, Nintendo’s rivals in kyoto. And do (堂) is very common used in vintage Japanese company name, is a part of the Yago (house name) culture.

If you wanna feel the sense of Tehonbiki, I recommend to watch Tazza: The High Rollers, it’s a Korean variant of Tehonbiki, but very well conveys the ‘name meaning of Nintendo’ in a modern way.

Considering who wrote the script, making the very first thing you are required to do in Portal putting a crate onto a red button was one hell of a piss take.

Still the most acidly written mainstream videogame, Chet and Erik at the absolute top of their game. Won’t be improved upon probably ever, most likely, at least at that budget level.

I had not even realized that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio made Monkey Ball 'cause they used to be Amusement Vision, in fact their first four games were

SpikeOut (playable in Like a Dragon)
Planet Harriers (c’mon!)
Daytona USA 2001 (the Dreamcast one)
Super Monkey Ball

And their old head Nagoshi had also produced Daytona 2.

I always want to pronounce the “Qube” in “Intelligent Qube” as “quoob.”

is that for keeping people from the reach of the Xbox, like it devours your soul if you come to close?.. keeping your Xbox on a short leash sounds like some odd kink :tarothink:

I’m hoping it’s the short cable that has quick disconnect so that a talking original Xbox doesn’t kill a baby, per the original manual.
