the people behind speedrun.com sold it to a corporation years ago who have been enshittifying it ever since
afaik speed demos archive is still the place to be right?
no absolutely not that is not the place to be. speedrun.com is the only game in town for most games. some specific popular older games and series have their own dedicated pages. otherwise speedrun.com is the de facto leaderboard site. it just sucks now
it is functionally fine, but last time i loaded it without an adblocker it was unpleasant
i fucking love that
more games should have named blades and also let you name your own blades
Strike Fighters 2: Operation Desert Storm 30th Anniversary has one of the most fucking extra stage selection songs Iâve ever seen for a screen you spend maybe 30 seconds on once at the start of a campaign and then never again. Itâs like they put the final multi-phase boss fight against Saddam track at the start of the game on accident.
watching someone stream an 100% playthrough of Perfect Dark and thinking about how it was probably my most anticipated game of all time at age 12 and i played an absurd amount of it (tho never managed to beat it on Perfect Agent) over the summer of 2000. but to this day i still couldnât tell you whether itâs a good game or not. iâm glad the game exists, for historical reasons. also glad i discovered Deus Ex not too long after
the contrast between perfect dark area 51 and deus ex area 51 is incredible lol
itâs funny because Deus Exâs Area 51 is one of the weaker levels of the game and Perfect Darkâs Area 51 levels are some of the better levels in that game. and yet still
The funny thing is that apparently this demonstration wasnât entirely fake (just mostly fake).
I am obsessed with Project Milo, please elaborate. As far as I can tell everything in that video is pre-scripted. What makes it indelibly funny to me is how obviously fake it is relative to whatâs being asserted. Itâs like a Simpsons gag.
From what I understand, Project Milo did actually exist and could actually react pretty accurately to a personâs emotions and had a lot of possible responses to different commands and phrases. It was apparently mainly scrapped because it wasnât very interesting or good, not because it didnât work.
I canât see how anything like this is possible in 2009. This kind of real-time speech recognition capable of analyzing all the elements of prosody with any kind of granularity or reliability would have been extraordinary. Even speech recognition programs that were just listening for phonemes had double-digit word error rates back then.
According to MS they used the Milo technology in Kinectamals. So I guess the tech was iffy on simulating a human child, but good enough for a cartoon tiger cub who wants scritches.
I remember giving my mother all of my hard-earned pocket money asking her to go get me Perfect Dark on launch day, and spent the whole day at school frothing madly to get home to play it. Then when I got home, she said she used the money to buy me some jeans and put the game on lay-by for my birthday. Never had I been so mad
âroo-keyâ and âcom-fortâ have been bouncing around in my head all day.
Perfect Dark rules. Not enough games these days have hidden pieces of cheese that serve no purpose.
