this is so interesting because, i think, the noa marketing people probably weren’t wrong to think what they thought about potential reception by american kids, . i expect market research and what was generally observable from children’s favorite toys and tv shows would have supported that the pokemon designs were “too cute” for the mid-90s american market.

which i think might mean that pokemon’s popularity helped these more “cutesy” (“kawaii” even) aesthetics have more purchase in american children’s culture.

i mean, that’s all speculation. and it was a wild thing to think they should/could completely redo the designs of these instantly iconic 150 character. interesting to think about how much pokemon may have shifted what is understood to be appealing to kids.
