videogame things you think about a lot lot lot lot lot lot

there was a guy in the something awful wow guild who got kicked out for trying to raid from the hospital when his wife was having a baby

Think about this guy’s wife all the time

Also think so much about the random who paused a Dota game for 20 minutes and drove to a Starbucks to escape to a mandatory wildlife evacuation and continued the game

I can’t remember if we won or not

I can’t believe 9 other people waited all that time for that guy but I’m glad we did

i dont understand ‘proc’, i mean after googling it enough i understand what its supposed to be used for but ‘programmed random occurence’ ? jesse what the hell are you talking about

It’s when a passive secondary effect is activated through the (attack/skill/item/condition) it is attached to

A common proc conditioninal would be “on hit”

yeah activates is what I say instead of proc fuck proc. I hate mmo slang so much sometimes!!!

I also hate how everyone makes acronyms for everything in the game they play as if all acronyms are completely unique even if they use the same letters. TOT can mean four different things. just say the fuckin words

According to this, it’s mainly from EverQuest and is not an acronym

i wasnt saying it was just so everyone knows that i know what proc means becuase james is very excited to tell everyone exactly what it means. the acronym hate is merely related

I don’t have a screenshot, but as I do my annual DS1 run, I am thinking a comment read under some video about the level design of Dark Souls , or maybe it was a lore video? Whatever the video was doesn’t matter, just that it was decent, but not memorable FromSoft video essay.

Someone commented how they got their friend a copy of Dark Souls who had never played a souls game before but really enjoyed it. They said their friend found the game “pretty hard but rewarding” which is a typical first time souls reaction. OP then noted friend said “it’s wild you can only heal with humanity, considering how rare it is”

OP then realized their friend beat Dark Souls without ever using the Estus Flask, or knowing how it worked

it’s from diku muds, a proc is a programming term for a lightweight function, contextually a function that is executed when the weapon strikes, there is a proc as a part of the definition of the weapon

Aggro is a binary state. You either have it or you don’t. You can draw aggro, have aggro, lose aggro. If the mob is attacking you you have aggro, if it isn’t you don’t.

Because aggro is a thing you possess relative to a mob, you can in the converse describe a mob as placing aggro upon you. The mob aggro’d me; I feigned death to de-aggro the mob.

Threat is granular. It can be raised and lowered by unit quantities. Threat comparisons between players determine who has aggro at any given time. The output of the threat function is an aggro determination.

Nearly all EQ style MMOs have essentially done away with threat management being a conscious and considered element of gameplay, and are the poorer for it imo.

This is like learning my friend in high school played up to the third disc in FF7 without ever understanding how Materia worked. She said it was too complicated and just coasted on Attack and Item.

I guess?? If you never use Materia, you have a huge HP boost so yeah, that could work??

once a guy who worked at fred meyer engaged me in friendly conversation because i was opening user-hostile consumer electronics packaging with a pocket knife by the trash cans immediately outside the front entrance. we got on the subject of video games somehow and i mentioned that i was obsessed with dark souls, he said he had rented dark souls 3 once and couldn’t beat the first area, he had grinded a lot and leveled up his strength so that he could use the winged knight’s halberd that dropped for him but despite coming very close to victory a few times was still unable to beat the boss that would allow him to proceed to the next area, the dancer of the boreal valley

i told him that he had nearly performed a feat worthy of a big streaming audience and that he should maybe try renting it again and going past the boss arena for the other boss at the end of the first level, he could probably steamroll the entire game now, he was very pleased to hear this

Reminds me, I had a coworker who spent 3 hours trying to beat the first boss in bloodbourne to similar results.

Also Fred Meyer mentioned, only chain that still sells blu rays in my city

def one of the cooler moves that 3 pulls is letting you sequence break there if you can beat dancer (a considerable feat, as you said)

CyberpunkRosary your story reminds me of when one of my old besties once claimed he beat Super Mario World as a kid before realizing there’s a run button (it was his 1st Mario game obvs). i give him the benefit of the doubt that he was misremembering not just bullshitting, either way tho i have never tested whether this is possible; i can imagine it being hard-but-doable on at least the vanilla route thru the game, right up until that one Valley of Bowser from hell that everyone remembers where the walkable surface moves up and down and you have to rush through these cramped tunnels to avoid being crushed. no way could anyone survive that at a leisurely pace

the level segment in question, which is its own videogame thing i think about a lot lot lot lot cuz its so diabolical and a unique challenge i havent really seen in a Mario game since

I beat SBW as a kid without knowing you could screw jump, does that count for anything

I was so shocked seeing all those Kaizo Mario hack speedruns like a decade later and seeing Mario do a move I’ve never witnessed before. It was spooky

i actually do believe implicitly that SMW was designed to be beatable without the spin jump. like i love the spin jump because it feels like it was snuck into the moveset last second and allowed to “break” the usual Mario level design in the same way Yoshi does on a more limited powerupless scale.

it’s weird that for just 1 game Mario and Luigi Mario, the Jumpmen, learned how to jump in such a way that could subvert their reality, and allow them to drill into the earth with their feet alone, and bounce on the heads of ghosts

Yeah I didn’t really know about all the uses for the spin jump cuz I played the game in Japanese. I thought you could just break bricks with it.
