videogame things you think about a lot lot lot lot lot lot

Looking at yet another Nier collaboration with another game I think about how Akihiko Yoshida drew a butt so good it changed the course of human culture.

You know everyone talks about Gabriel Knight 3’s Cat Hair Mustache, but no one talks about how that and its wild player-controlled camera are the only interesting things about the game. The rest of the game is Gabriel giving up on finding a missing baby, Gabriel breaking into everyone’s hotel room just to see if there’s anything interesting, Gabriel giving up on solving a murder, and Grace spending like 30% of the game on her computer drawing lines on religious paintings. This game was a blueprint for Europeans to continue making adventure games that are more boring than schoolwork.

thinking about random blog posts i read in the early 00s that stuck with me

including an unhinged rant that phantasy star 2 is an “anti communist allegory” that i always found very funny and another where the author very passionately insisted that tactics ogre was miles better than fft, convincing me to give it a go…

…they were right

I have a theory about the P in “P switch” of Super Mario Bros. 3. No one knows its meaning, but one of its little known effects is pausing conveyor belts, so I predict that this effect is what it was given first in development, where it was then named a “Pause Switch”, and only later was it given the unintuitive coins←→blocks effect so as to enable use in other levels.

Was considering replaying MGS4 and then saw a promo for Laughing Octopus and reconsidered.

This is the first time I ever even took the time to consider what the P means, somehow.

for some reason, i used to think that Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage (the other N64 RPG) came out shortly after Quest 64, in like 1999 or something

no. apparently it came out in 2001. same year as FFX.

I was a big fan of the Bond films as a child, and was introduced to the franchise through Goldeneye 64. I remember being a little surprised that movie Bond didnt just mow down people like Arnold in Commando
