I kept a list going of what all I managed to finish. I can’t see my tired dead ass finding any time to finish anything between now and the 31st, so it’ll probably wind up being, uh…

Dabbled in too many games to list, should dabble more in Street Fighter 6.
I also wrote two big ass blog posts about my favorite games I played this year, and a buncha honorable mentions. You can read 'em here:
So far I’ve added or updated notes on 288 game things this year: the_game_database - dosearch
Turns out that I barely played Steam games in 2023. Between the time I spent playing Civ VI, Pentiment, and Mask of the Rose, that’s 98% of my playtime, and I only had three sessions with the last of those. The bigger story for me would be time spent in FFXIV, but I didn’t purchase it through Steam, so it’s not tracking that stat.
yeah idk. had a csgo and aim training phase in the spring, deaths door and art od rally and super mega baseball this month. otherwise basically nothing.
o I guess I finished disco elysium this year and that was really good.
should we have a separate GOTY thread I want to see what ppl liked
barely played anything in the back half of the year because work feels like a bad videogame and vice versa. armored core 6 felt like a good videogame and the worst job but i was too tired for what it demanded
respawn fixed titanfall 2 matchmaking and the population is healthier than it was in 2017. it’s still sublime
i enjoyed watching my partner play zelda and alan wake 2 immensely. at the same time i don’t think i can be bothered to play an action game where you manage an inventory ever again if i can’t do it for those two
i enjoyed playing life is strange, before the storm, and true colors. true colors especially comes together in its last chapter and nails the real world subject matter (labor and child welfare) where the first game fumbled into a veronica mars villain and deus ex machina. its mechanic and puzzles are weaker than the first game but unless they reprise that exact mechanic i think it’s a flash in the pan. i need to play 2 but it starts with a shot from a cop car dash cam so i’m waiting for a resilient moment. standing by “white lodge david cage.” looking forward to lost records
oxenfree II was gorgeous and confident. i didn’t connect with it like the aforementioned lesbian detective adventure games but i didn’t need to — the player character exists without the player ego, like kentucky route zero’s do. i wonder about netflix as a publisher but i don’t know a single person who played it there. i still believe there’s a blue ocean for adventure games and VNs if someone can crack the UI and business model
finally, class of ‘09: the re-up is incredible and my game of the year. total left field surprise courtesy @Brooks sending me a trailer and me and @miffy throwing caution to the wind for morbid curiosity. i gotta collect my thoughts elsewhere
I also played very very little this year. Zelda was good though as with the last one I was kind of tired of it by the time I was strong enough for all the wild hidden late game stuff so I have the sense I left some of it on the table.
I was also not in the mood for SF6 or AC6 for whatever reason but I’d like to get to them sometime for sure.
my new GPU finally incentivized me to play BG3 post-act 1, Alan Wake 2, and phantom liberty, but that’s all only as of this month, so I am not making very fast progress
Pizza Tower was great
Played about twice as much as last year. Did a grid and I think my personal top 3 are Hi-Fi Rush, Bayonetta Origins, and SF6. Other things on the grid just kept cropping up in my thoughts so must’ve left some kinda scar tissue behind.
And yes Pokemon Sleep being on here means I’d rather have nice sleep than play FF16 or whatever
Retro was playing Ocarina of Time with @VastleCania … and also figuring out HOW to play swapping the controller online.
There are some forever games on that list. That’s a lot!
Games you could play forever?
LOL there are those games,
I just mean really long games that would take me months like Baulders Gate or EDF.
Start of 2023: Fighting, Pac, Wrestling, MTNH2
End of 2023: Fighting, Souls, Sonic, Tecmo
when i saw how much people love t4t ghost/soap i must admit it made my heart swell remembering the good old days of og mw2’s airsoft m4 s-system and yaoi thoughts about those tf141 boys taking over military otaku’s brains. We’ve made progress…in the ways that matter
Most regretted game: Final Fantasy XVI
Least regretted game: Final Fantasy XIV
Attending Daphny and Veronica’s wedding in XIV and then partying with the Butts FC and interviewing them for Preserving Worlds was an all-time great video game experience.
Also all of the Shadowbringers expansion and the end part of Endwalker blew me the hell away. Who knew a non-Itoi JRPG could actually make me feel things?
They both took me like two weeks. But I also hate the idea of completing games. Maybe if I figure out how to live forever.
