UFO 50

I gave Barbuta a proper shot tonight, making a fastidiously detailed map of it as I went (as the good Lord intended).

I only explored 2/3rds of it before getting a game over this time, but it is a wonderful, wonderful little game.

barbuta is way shorter than one fears it could be

thinking about barbuta at work (they can’t stop me (neither can you))

A straightforward Barbuta 2 would be an isometric platformer like Knight Lore or Solstice or Landstalker. (Some tracks from Equinox would really fit the quiet vibe, actually.)

Barbuta 3D: Virtual Barbuta.

Barbuta MMO that’s just a bajillion little guys plodding through a 100x100 screen castle just as dense and inscrutable as the original.

Barbuta TTRPG where you roll a 2d6 to make blind jumps.

Riker Googling: “is transfem barbuta canon?”

mod that adds Barbuta to Velgress

Barbuta for Smash 6

Kick Club is so fucking hard jesus christ. I can get through the first three world and lose maybe one or two lives but then those football throwing assholes just destroy me. I hate it and I’m absolutely going to finish it if it kills me. I’ll inevitably get the cherry because I’ve already beaten the high score and didn’t even finish the game

i played a little of this it’s fun  hyper contender is a lot of fun even against the CPU and i appreciate that it’s a game that feels both modern and NES / famicom -inspired at once and isnt a sidescrolling platformer lol. i’m obviously a pretty big fan of NES sidescrolling platforming games (ms. elephant tattoo) but i also tend to think that so many games in this genre were produced until like the late 90s that the prospect of playing a new one isn’t inspiring a lot of excitement in me, i guess i’ve made the comparison to listening to a musical group that established a new style or genre or whatever is often more enjoyable than listening to a later group playing music inspired by them. i liked kick club too tho so maybe i just think there should be more nonscrolling platformers, i think single screen games are pretty fascinating for how they were not as popular in the 80s and 90s as scrolling platformers by quite a lot i think probably. overall like way more twee than any games from this era actually are tho lol

even so the scrolling platformer games do seem pretty solid tho…

i really liked the bird dinosaur strategy game and valbrace the dungeon cralwer too.

I’ve been listening to this podcast. It’s a little dry because it’s all game designers talking about design, but it’s interesting stuff. They also just started a series on Caves of Qud! It’s also pretty cool that all their music is by DoseOne.

I learned that my PC Engine controller clone from 8bitdo does work if I plug it in instead of using the receiver. Even the turbo works…

So they finally fixed jumping in magic garden, maybe I’ll actually try to clear it now

okay now that jumping was fixed, magic garden was a really easy cherry, my second so far

Is it even possible to beat the game without getting the cherry? I was regularly getting above 20k points for like an hour before I actually managed to clear the game.

(magic garden still has some frustrating bugs in it but that’s perhaps fitting with the pseudo-nostalgic framing of ufo 50)

edit: oh yeah, I did this on keyboard. Controller was definitely holding me back

sure is, I played very conservatively because I kept dying in stupid ways and managed to clear without the high score. however I did get the high score without clearing as well.
