phew I could finally read this thread now
had trouble seeing FWWM as anything other than exploitative, think I would rather have skipped it. wondered if I should’ve watched e8 and e9 of s2 since I skipped everything after 7 until the last one on parker’s advice
I’m so glad that the return was at its absolute weirdest right at the start, I’d tried watching it with almost no memory of the original show when it aired a couple years ago and it immediately made me feel like I wasn’t ready
loved that lynch gave himself such hilarious material, half the time I’m watching lynch I find myself undermining the imagery he’s putting on screen by imagining him give stage directions in my head and this helped to drain that brain fluid
wasn’t sure they knew what they were doing with evil cooper for a great deal of it, whereas other parts of it that might’ve dragged (like anything with naomi watts’ end of the plot, or the in-your-face excessive violence against women) were otherwise good at endlessly reinforcing themselves, those were the only scenes that I felt like didn’t really build to much
laura dern was an incredible addition, absolutely adored the last episode, what an ending
incredible to me just to think that out of everyone who might like to make an endlessly surreal broken-chronology languid reinterpretation of an earlier work, david lynch is the only one who can

he also might be the only american who could still fall back to atomic bomb imagery to tell a story like this
I’m glad they didn’t make us wait even longer for cooper to fully return because his certainty really does anchor the show, even in the ways he’s made to be obviously wrong, so much of twin peaks for me is still fully inhabiting the way kyle maclachlan sells that inner life

I also love madchen amick and I can never get over how she’s the kind of actress who it seems like anyone else would just give terrible material over and over again and in this she’s everything
which is also most of the reason riverdale is good, they at least get it

the only shot in the whole movie I liked was when she sees bob in the corner of the bedroom with the dresser
the whole idea of having this character who initially had this mythic presence because she was never portrayed alive and had a frankly improbable number of vices attributed to her have to then be subjected to all this horrible abuse half naked when the story was no longer being told on network TV was not great. it was objectively too porny for a story about trauma
and the cinematography at the end for the actual murder was just cheap after that

ok most of james’ scenes were also very grounded and haunting and it was difficult for me to remember after consuming the entire series in the space of a month that, wherever those are called back to, their core is in FWWM
that was maybe the only part of the film where I felt like I didn’t mind that I was being shown something I’d already been told about
Fire Walk With Me is one of the most uncompromising and realistic portrayals of a woman’s trauma and is probably the best film Lynch has made.

I am not clear on the extent to which they made up the Bob plot as they went along and I like that it seems like it could go either way, my main problem with FWWM is that having a narrative built like that does mean that maybe you’re not on firm enough ground for some subject matter
maybe I’ll watch it again in a few years though
