TV AfterParty

I feel like they trapped themselves with that show by rly nebulously defining the titular game & then trying to make that game the primary hinge for all plot. All these ppl arguing about their role as senior developer on calvinball vs. the artistic autonomy of calvinball. Tension-filled creative process made absurd cuz the primary audience is children is fine as a premise but they’re so unconfident in hammering down what that product entails it all evaporates into hot air. The character actors have nothing to play besides incredibly nonspecific stereotypes of creative types.

idk if it gets funny (who can say) but i think “i get all the juice i need from hard candy” every time i realize i need to drink water so charlotte nicdao’s performance is pretty sticky

it definitely gets more cringe

On the halo tv show master chief had cortana help him do self surgery to remove the mkultra pellet from his back and then there was a big battle where he kept screaming while killing covenants and curb stomped an elite. Fuckin half blown up jackals crawling around with their guts hanging out and shit. Then the chief found out about the spartan ii program, being kidnapped and whatnot, and immediately tried to frag dr. halsey by exposing her to a liquefying dose of radiation.

Extremely funny show, the Chief kicks ass, it got a lot better after it turned into being about how the unsc is so fascist people outside of it live like medieval peasants and that the military loves child grooming

true detective night country is great. i hope jodie foster, kali reis, and jerma985 figure out what happened to those people

the callbacks are interesting but i really hope they don’t ending explained or bring back mcconaughey

Last night’s episode had not one, not two, but four emotional pop ballad sequences. The first two were just the opening credits song so they had the same song playing 3 times within around 15 minutes. Surely this has to be illegal

Also, seems any character who is supposed to be old is just a someone in their mid-twenties with a white streak in their hair. I guess that’s something to do with cultivation?

im enjoying watching it if nothing else the b-roll footage is quite striking in hdr

at the start of the latest episode of tru detective i was like, “ah, finally they are doing flashbacks that are just as trashy as i liked them” but then later on they show another awful iraq war flashback and its just too much hack shit for me. why do they keep overextending themselves with those scenes, i wonder.

still not super into the supernatural elements of the story but the characters are fun and i like the setting.

i hate you so much for this

I used a free trial of some streaming service to watch The Curse over the past few days. I probably would have given up on it after a couple episodes despite liking the general style if not for some of the talk on SB. Some of the awkward/uncomfortable scenes felt pretty forced and unconvincing, especially early on.

But I started finding the show more compelling around the halfway point (I think particularly starting with the scene where the couple shows Mark the house and he perfectly checks some of her boxes but not all of them), and the last episode really helped push the show into the territory of things I like to see.

One of the main things that motivated me to watch the show in the first place and hang on until the end was a misunderstanding on my part. I somehow had the idea that The Curse was subtly an adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft story, and I therefore thought Villain’s comment here was referring to this show rather than a 1980s movie by the same name. I became more and more curious when and how it would take that turn.

It didn’t, of course, and I think I would have (unjustly) been pretty disappointed in the show if it hadn’t taken a surprising (though not-so-Lovecraftian) turn of its own.

watched mr. and mrs. smith to see what some of the atlanta people are up to and it is very interesting to see something so slow and interior and PRESTIGE styled that is ostensibly basically a case of the week procedural. i only watched the first one but i wonder how the tone is gonna shake out. it doesn’t seem as frothy or light on it’s feet as like burn notice or the jon hamm fletch movie or something. the leads don’t have like ratatat romantic comedy patter it’s just sort of realistically awkard? it’s carving out a unique thing. of course watching i cannot help but wonder what the alternate phobe waller bridge version would have been. have not seen a house that is more NYC real estate porn on a tv show since that one episode of Louie.

The procedural nature of the new one made sense to me when I found out the original Mr. and Mrs. Smith was a CBS procedural with the same premise, lol.

I do miss when Donald Glover did straight comedy. This is probably my whitest opinion.

When you say this, I’m reminded of a Derrick Comedy Smash Bros skit that is very hard to watch.

Haha! You Lovely Rascals. I genuinely believed this was real, because (gestures about broadly).

Then again, that is how satire is supposed to work, right?
