I finished watching special ops lioness and some day they’re gonna teach this show in a women’s studies class as an example of the disastrous consequences when fellas have thoughts and choose to share them

saw the first episode of the new true detective season.

it’s sorta hillarious that the setup for this season’s big crime(s?) is laid out with a slasher “the killer is running in these poorly lit halls” type of scene and then almost immediately you get not one, but two (!!) Magical White Men show up. they are super into CG animals doing crazy shit now.

everything just feels way more campy than what i remember from seasons 1 and 3 (the only ones i remember anything about) but also it’s blatantly a show that’s About the 2010s / 2020s* which considering the type of guy nic pizzolato is, i can only shudder to think what thats going to entail by the end of the story.

this episode also seemed to try really hard to estabilish the type of moody atmosphere the series became famous for – the drawn out shots of the environment as you drive by, etc – but they never land it because they keep machine-gun-shooting characters in your face.

* to put it in perspective, one of the central characters is a #noDAPL activist lol

pizzolato’s not involved. gal named issa lopez directed and co-wrote the whole season

jodie foster can carry an entire show with her facial expressions so it’s fine imo

speaking of did anyone watch that true detective except the supernatural part is real show with ben mendelsohn. I watched half of it. it was kind too dour even for me. I think I like that stuff more when the thing is about how “man is the cruelest animal” or whatever and not when it’s just some x-files shapeshifter thing running around.

John Hawkes is in the new TD season? Didn’t he already do “True Detective The Movie”? Lol.

This whole thing might be a little too on the nose if you know what I mean

also that lioness show was just sicario 2 but what if it was about a gal who never didn’t look like she just got beat up by men. one trick pony taylor sheridan, of course america is obsessed with a max hardcore looking motherfucker who writes the same story about how operators gotta operate over and over again but the spice is the new and different ways women have extreme violence inflicted on them

Started watching the Sword and Fairy 6 TV series as it came up in my Youtube reccs.
Straight away in the first few minutes it’s already basically giving away major late game plot twists.

I assume they are doing this to bring more focus to the two main protagonists earlier in the plot instead of them just sort of tagging along like in the game. Although I think this also makes it clear that it’s basically a star vehicle for the two hottest new young actors to act cute together or have abrupt slow-mo romance scenes accompanied by emotional pop ballads. Around half of each episode seems devoted to Yue Qi making funny faces and doing baby talk while Jinzhao teases her and pinches her cheeks. They also look nothing like their game counterparts (Jinzhao doesn’t have an eyepatch, I assume because the actor has a clause in his contract that forbids marring his beautiful face with tight straps).

Despite all that, I found myself enjoying it more than I expected. Usually I bounce off these Chinese fantasy dramas because they frontload with too many incomprehensible lore dumps and flashy fight scenes before you’ve had a chance to get care about anything. But here, it seems to be following the basic gist of the game’s plot closely enough that it’s easier to get into.

After the first 5 episodes it becomes ‘Members Only’ though, so I guess that’s the end of that…

i’m only a couple episodes in but fargo s5 has been more fun for me than the previous two seasons were. think 1 & 2 are both very good, 3 is bad, and 4 is middling at best (eps 8 and 9 are almost very good but the episodes before aren’t good enough to justify it, and the episodes after are pretty lackluster falling action).

i think some of the performances are a bit weird in 5 and i’m not convinced the writing is good, exactly, but it feels a lot more like the coen bros. movie in tone, and there are decent # of engaging sequences.

Nevermind, it seems the Member’s Only episodes are unlocking each day.

I have this weird kind of brain poison that means whenever I am playing a game, watching a TV series or reading a book I am always imagining how I would handle adapting it into another medium, so this being an adaptation of a 50-ish hour RPG is scratching a specific sort of itch for me.

One thing about this version is the main actress’s exaggerated babytalk performance kind of highlights how much the story hinges on a romance between a jealous, overprotective guy and an infantilized woman with the mentality of a three year old.

Also, the CGI is mostly fine but gets amusingly wonky when they try to depict fantasy creatures. Watching the actors trying to interact with a cartoon dog and mechanical teddy bear is pretty hilarious.

When watching this on Youtube without an adblocker, you gotta be ready for some ad-ception as the episodes have chinese baby formula adverts throughout which often get interrupted by more ads

I’m enjoying Monsieur Spade, about Sam Spade being retired in france in the 60s. Show’s by scott frank and tom fontana. Unsurprisingly Clive Owen is pretty good at doing a bogart’s spade 20 years later type performance. But there is a dan brown albino monk assassin guy and according to a plot summary “Spade learns that the murders are somehow connected to a mysterious child who is believed to possess great powers” (the kid only just showed up at the end of episode 2) so maybe it’s about to get incredibly stupid

Finished True Detective s3. When we were coming up on the last couple episodes my wife said, with some dread, “we’ve got some serious tv to watch,” and I said, don’t worry, these always have happy endings. And it did. It was weird to realize how true that is, and how much of a formula they all follow when s1 seemed so singular in its beginnings.

I think 2 is still my favorite and I love 4 so far

Do people have opinions about Mythic Quest here? I assume it’s inevitable. Having watched the first two episodes I find it generally likeable but a huge case of something less than the sum of its parts. Especially after seeing David Gordon Green directed them? He’s usually pretty good w comedy IMO. Does it get… Funnier?
