Translations and ROMhacks II

That’s it, thank you!

Linda³ is probably in the top 5 games I want to see translated. There have been attempts, but 6 years later and it seems to have slowed down to a halt (last update in 2018 was “No news on Linda Cubed Again, sadly.”)

Apparently, the newest version of Retroarch can perform a machine translation on games:

Speech Mode – Upon pressing the AI Service button, a quick scan is done of the text, and the recognized text is then translated to speech. You can press the AI Service button at any time and it will try to process the current snapshot of the screen it made. This mode is non-interruptable, meaning the game will continue running when you hit this button, and the output speech will take as long as it takes for the server to respond to your query and pipe the sound to RetroArch.

Image Mode – In image mode, it tries to replace the text onscreen with the output text. For instance, in the video you see above, the game is played in Japanese, so when we hit the AI Service button, it tries to replace the Japanese text with English translated text. This mode is interruptable – this means that when you hit the AI Service button, it pauses the game and shows you an image with the replacement text UNTIL you hit either the AI Service hotkey or the Pause hotkey again, then it will continue playing.

Emulators finally catching up with VN auto translators. At least they don’t also forcibly include a chat application.

Oh wow, I read about this one once when @Tulpa posted the box art here. A shame if someone put in all that effort to translate it that they couldn’t have worked on the much souped up PCE CD version instead.

Is it just that much harder to hack a PC Engine game then an NES one? Might just be that there’s way more content take care of.

i assume, since there’s a 20+ year history of nes hacking, it probably is a lot more well-documented and thus easier to do than pretty much any other console

Yeah, the hacking on this was done by somebody who has done a shitload of NES hacking, but apparently very little or no PCE/CD hacking. Looking at the list PCE-CD translations, only 6 are complete, with two being for the same Ys game, so not a lot of people out there with PCE-CD hacking experience (at least, who’ve worked on a project to completion, anyway).

oh, i just went to look up ddstranslations and they have me blocked on twitter? so yeah, what’s the story here

hahaha me too

Looking at their Twitter likes and there sure are a lot of “anti-sjw” and anti-Quinn tweets here, so I guess there’s that. Yikes.

OH THERE ARE TRUMP TWEETS IN HERE TOO

yeah i stopped following them a while back because they retweeted weird shit. i think a few translators are like that, unfortunately…

well, gonna have to scrub that disappointment out of my brain so I can get back to enjoying things

any chance someone has a patched version of Tuned Heart? I swear to god I have like 2-3 redundant saved archives of old J-PC roms and every time a patch comes out it requires the one file type I don’t have.

incoming sakura wars patch and official MOON rerelease (hi tim)
