The Renga Game

I would use these rules again for another round of Renga, btw

This was a daunting style to come to grips with but the finished poems are really good

Big agree! I really like how collaborative they are.

It was @bib who suggested doing something with repetition. Thanks Ben.

But the poem you posted is amazing, so it’s a victimless crime. And breaking the rules is cool :sunglasses:

Yeah it ended perfectly inbd

I’ve arrived, but I still must hurry
Passing cops, I try not to fight
Wheeling bags, I hurriedly scurry
To the gate, where I’ll meet my flight

passing cops, i try not to fight
incarceration will make me tardy
To the gate, where I’ll meet my flight
i hope my luggage is good and hardy

incarceration will make me tardy
a life contained in the box
i hope my luggage is good and hardy
to keep up with the ticking clocks

A life contained in the box
I’ve arrived, but I still must hurry
to keep up with the ticking clocks
wheeling bags, I hurriedly scurry

Woah, there’s a whole thing going on with prisons and baggage. Your possessions really do tether you in place, huh?

a rabbit in winter

Now flown south for winter, the geese
For idyllic pastures sunny
A small comfort, the snow-muted peace
For shivering, frostbitten bunny

Oh! Idyllic pastures sunny
Full of tubers and roots so sweet
For shivering, frostbitten bunny
What a pleasant dream it could meet

Full of tubers and roots so sweet,
the garden rests to better grow
What a pleasant dream it could meet,
nestled in its grass-lined burrow

The garden rests to better grow,
A small comfort, the snow-muted peace
Nestled in its grass-lined burrow.
Flown south for winter, the honking geese.

WTH, how is this so satisfying to read?

Once we do a bunch of games we should compile them into a zine and include credits for all the poems’ collaborators

I really love the economy of pantoums. You get a lot of buzz with only a handful of lines. It took me a while to get my head around them but the results are great

One of my goals is to make a small one for the meet up. As we have been writing, I started thinking a full on book binding would be better than a small stapled thing.

In my head is the seed of an idea to make a visual art version of this game. That art would be a good companion to the poems if we ever make a book.

I think this is a thing? We used to do it by dividing a paper in thirds (etc), the first person draws the torso of a weird guy then folds it so only the bottom edge is showing, then the next person follows those lines to draw the body and folds similarly, third person draws the legs and then you unfold it and gaze upon the weird guy you made

Yeah, exquisite corpse right? You can play a text version of it as well but making weird bodies is fun too

Just reread the thread, again, great stuff everyone

I’m planning on going to a zine fest in Virginia in January. One thing I would like to make and bring is a collection of poems we have made here. Are people comfortable with that?

Also, I’m going to run a new round in November. Please look forward to it
