The Renga Game

I might need some extra time I am feeling quite lowly atm

Take all the time you need! I know circumstances at home are very different than they were two weeks ago, what with COVID and all

I gotta say that writing up my first stanza in this format felt oddly higher-stakes than before. Still not sure how I feel about what I wrote.

Hope everybody is doing well with this.

(Also, I noticed that accidentally sent a PM to the void with no recipients. It might be a good idea to double check that you didn’t do that.)

BBQ chicken and a coke:
Proust’s madeleine with a thin crust.
I laughed so hard at my own joke.
A bite to recall what’s gone to dust.

Proust’s madeleine with a thin crust,
regrets floating in minestrone.
A slurp to recall: what’s gone to dust?
Thoughts warp and shrink like pepperoni.

regrets floating in minestrone.
'maybe someday i wont be alone"
Thoughts warp and shrink like pepperoni.
i dab the grease from my mouth and go home

In the last stanza, I can’t help but read “alone” and “home” as “alone y” and “home y”

what you all didn’t see was me having a mini breakdown in mintys dms because after reading his examples I felt like I didn’t even know what rhyming MEANT anymore, and also all the abacadaba rhyming schemes confused me so much I thoguht every stanza was gonna be rhyming the same sound. don’t write poems when you have strep throat butts! it makes you stupid!

Remember, you are not dumb. Poetry is dumb.

I need to find my copy of ‘very bad poetry’ it’s like one of the only poetry books I’ve ever read, besides incisions

and like I feel like I learned everything I know from it? I DIDNT THINK THE POEMS WERE THAT BAD

Inheritance

other than to live forever
what else is there to deign to want
would that my home is not a debtor
with nothing more than name to flaunt

What else is there to deign to want
A life of unearned security
With nothing more than name to flaunt
Fate lacks a certain surety

A life of unearned security-
Too much and too little to ask, yet
Fate lacks a certain surety.
A dream of four walls and a porch set

i know that when you go away,
the goal is to be gone. and yet,
here we are again. another day,
one more postcard-perfect sunset.

the goal is to be gone. and yet,
maybe it’s time we headed home.
one more postcard-perfect sunset.
one more quick dip in the seafoam.

maybe, it’s time we headed home.
packing our bags, hitting the road,
just one more dip in the seafoam.
what’s another day in this abode…

packing our bags. hitting the road.
here we go again. yet another day.
just one more stay in this abode,
if only we could stay away

I love this. It’s like, a really vivid picture of a certain type of eating alone in a diner.

Debt

How do you determine what is owed?
Are you keeping an account book?
A credit for every seed sowed,
Chore done, stomach filled, burden took?

Are you keeping an account book?
To measure checks and balances
Chore done, stomach filled, burden took?
No time for fiscal dalliances

To measure checks and balances,
you cannot find the proper scale.
No time for fiscal dalliances.
No time for calling heads or tails.

You cannot find the proper scale
How do you determine what is owed?
No time for calling heads or tails
Credit for the reaped. Damn what is sowed.
