THE POINTS OF F██KIN' MACHINE

Broke my old score. Shot straight from 57 to… 58. That’s an improvement! If I’m going to be at the bottom of the leaderboard I’m going to earn it.

57-58 is a pretty good score by the time you reach the first boss FWIW, I’m rarely higher than that when I reach it. The scores on this table generally break down as “died on first boss”, “died on second boss”, “died on third boss”, or “past the third boss and all bets are off” so you are only a beaten boss away from adding a good 100+ points to that score.

Yeah I can get to the boss and sometimes even beat him. I’m improving for sure. Soon I will be able to last after beating him.

280 is currently my best score. I was choosing the gems for a bit, but I’ve switched back to the shield and the big shot if I can keep it intact after the second boss(feels good). The 2nd boss is really fun, occasionally I’ll get impatient to reach them and get into a death spiral.
I was initially onboard because this game reminded me of pacifist Asteroid, I love how it combines evasive movement with shooting(in a more direct way than in Asteroids). It’s also great to see peoples’ progress, and get a bit of discussion about an interesting game that might not otherwise.
I’m going to keep playing this after the competition is over, DJ Puff and Cans are very fly, I’m looking forward to unlocking the last one

I have never actually picked big shot so I have no idea what it actually is (I’d guess a bigger smoke trail) but I disagree with the accepted knowledge that “gems is best, only use shield when learning”. If you know you are gonna say make it to boss two and die there then sure, the extra gems will help a great deal in the context of a high score competition. That said I don’t think there has been a single time where if given the choice of not dying when making a mistake for the cost of 20 gems I wouldn’t have taken that. Even if you can get past the three bosses to the great beyond I think it comes down to if I think I am more likely to pick up an additional 20 gems after I eventually get hit, and I in general I think the answer is yes. Worth noting is that I played a couple rounds today, got back beyond the third boss, picked the shield and took two hits within three seconds of each other so I might be very wrong here… but I think it’s the stronger choice of the two. Maybe a mix of the two (gems first, then shield later) is optimal?

I see where you’re coming from. I think the idea is that you’d grab gems to increase your score while everything is still slow. It can come out to more than twenty gems if you cook them. The better you get, the less you’ll need the shield until it starts to get real fast and then it might only help you get five more seconds.

When I picked the gem option at the red door they just went straight to my score, was I doing something wrong? I mean I think the shield would still be a good option, but if the numbers shift markedly the match might change.

I try to touch the corner of the door and immediately turn when choosing the gems.

I cavitated the butterfly! I knew killing such a beautiful creature would spell my doom!

NGL I might be satisfied with this score and call it good

I like this game a lot, it was worth it just for the soundtrack! The scoring mechanic is a little harsh for me though, and seems a little artificial, I guess? It tracks a very weird skill. Also I’m just not that good at it lol

Yes, it’s been nice to see a dedicated thread about an obscure indie game go on this long. Reminds me of glossolalia’s 2009 vision for old SB:

I think it’s a really great arcade game for its scope. It does something that every great arcade game does in allowing players to develop different competencies in every first thirty seconds of playing. For example, your first beginnings are trials of mastering movement. Then it becomes a question of working out how you can kill the enemies. Then you can work on internalizing how long it takes to cook gems. These skills layer on top of each other, becoming more automatic as you keep trying. It’s still satisfying to play through the first zone for the twentieth time because you’re focusing on different aspects of the game.

my high score is 183

the presentation is very nice. i feel like i am too bad to really enjoy this game. if i break out of spinning i die quite easily. it’s frustrating spending a few minutes to get to the second boss, only to be killed in 5 seconds.

I scored a whole extra point!

I’m only playing once or twice a day at this point, was curious if there was a mentioned end date for this as if there was I missed it.

It’s funny that you mention it! Now that it’s Monday again, I planned another drawing!

The new winner is…

@daphaknee!

Please let us know what your choice is before next Monday.

I’ll be keeping previous leaderboards up at the top, so feel free to continue adding scores if you’d like.

Would it make sense to create one thread per game? (Assuming that is not already the plan.)

I’ve always thought it funny that Mega Man had points, presumably just because someone couldn’t imagine a video game without points. Probably would not be the best choice for a contest because I think you can just defeat respawning enemies forever.
