Total opposite for me, I’d be hyped about Celeste even if I hadn’t played Towerfall. It looks like it’s inspired by the IWBTG mod community, which is a super mechanically developed “minor literature” just waiting to have actual aesthetics added to it. And those aesthetics!
War Nerd has a bunch of episodes about Chinese military history now and when they covered ROT3K they literally said “most Western people who know about this know about it thru video games” and I, I, I,
Brad Smith’s Lizard for the NES has finally (finally, after 3 years of waiting) reached a completed state (Source: 1, 2). The game’s going into a backer-beta period sometime soon, meaning the actual release will happen sometime after-soon.
If you don’t know what Lizard please refer to http://lizardnes.com/ (there’s an old demo there).
tbf, a lot of people DO know about it through video games. well, the novel has lots of fans in unexpected places too, but the games are definitely a way in for many people. it’s one of those weird things where people who have no interest in any other part of chinese history or culture can just get totally absorbed into it as its own world, without any need or interest in expanding beyond 3k stuff. it’s kind of fascinating to me, because there isn’t really anything else like that. i don’t even think the other ming novels (water margin, journey to the west, plum in the golden vase [the horny one]) have the same kind of following. the jtw stuff is mostly just people who really like monkey, it doesn’t tend to go much deeper than that. but with rot3k you never know when you’re going to encounter someone who has, like, extremely developed opinions about what kind of sword lu bu uses or whatever.
