Tetris 99 is proof that, any time a publisher comes out with a breakthrough hit or a new take on a genre, Nintendo just walks up to them and goes “hold my beer”

I think Link’s Awakening is one of the most perfect games, so I was really guarded when I watched that trailer, but am actually very encouraged by the fact that it appears to have the exact same world layout and the mechanics look almost identical? That’s the way you remake Link’s Awakening. I just pray to god it only lets you equip two things at once.

It really does look like a little tiny clay Nintendo Power cover. That’s so neat.

yeah my important game was metroid 2 and the remake of that was a “re-imagining” and also it fucking sucked

link’s remakening looks aight. it would be cool if they include the original on the disc but they wont

no s/t/he/y’s/'re right, the only-two-items thing was the basis of most of the puzzles. They’d have to change so much about how the game fundamentally works that it would be a tragedy

ok i’m really glad i’m not alone in being a little underwhelmed by the cutesy style but also for me the lurid DX version colours are like an essential part of the unsettling experience and that’s a big part of what i’m grieving

but also yeah like, that first mini-boss being so bouncy and silly is putting me off? like, this is definitely just the first time something i cared about as a kid has gotten a remake but i definitely remember everything being more grotesque and terrifying

well guess im glad i never bought SMM1! and also guess it’s worth buying a Switch now i think that’s enough good games to justify ~300 of my hard-won dollars

i came here expecting hotter takes about the LA remake. i love the style, it’s a terrific evolution of the look from A Link Between Worlds, but it’s incredibly weird to me that it is for a remake, and i kinda hate that it’s a remake for THAT particular game. Link’s Awakening is, aesthetically, perfect just the way it is, and so suited to the Game Boy.

like even the fact that it appears to be a contiguous world and not divided into screens is getting on my nerves… for me the fundamental appeal of Koholint as an overworld is that it is a 16x16 grid of dense, detailed little nodes.
Give me this look for a fresh new Zelda that’s built from the ground up to accommodate it. and put the ALBW team on it please and thank you

keep the only 2 items at a time gimmick, incorporate some kind of system that lets you cycle through them without pausing imo

Something intimate and puzzle-y seems right after BotW but I’d rather it was a new thing too

how about a compromise:

you can only equip two items at once, but the sword, shield, and power bracelet (especially the power bracelet (oh and maybe boots)) don’t count against that limit.

Part of the fun was making those hard choices though.

“This room’s got a lot of tough enemies… but I also need to jump… wait, can I jump OVER the enemies? If I can do that, I can go feather/sword… ah but I also need to bomb something… hmmmmm”

for me it was always more like “aww mommmm do i HAVE to put away the roc’s feather for this puzzle?? i wanna jump”

thjat’s how i knew BotW was gonna rule… link got ups

Yeah, I dig this. As I think about it more, this is bothering me more. That navigable grid is so appealing to me and I love all the cramped, distinct little spaces. A lot of non-NES/Game Boy Zeldas feel smaller than they are, because they have such wide open areas that don’t have much in them. (I even feel this way about ALTTP and ALBTW)

And, yeah, Link’s Awakening looks and feels just as good and fresh to me today as anything. It feels so goddamn good.

I have only played LA on the GBC, I confess, so I guess I’m fine with color. Still one of my all time favorites.

Perfect game. Only two items. Sword and shield included.

the worst thing about the capcom zeldas is that you can’t jump and slash enemies at the same time, link’s slashes go over their heads when you’re in the air. it’s fucking BULLSHIT

i completely get people loving the original B&W version aesthetically, but i too played the DX version first (it was my first game boy color game… i got it on my birthday and played it while sitting on a beach, squinting at my non-backlit LED screen under the blinding sun…) and i think it’s hands-down the best GBC colorization anyway, it looks great
