the lunatic obscurity thread

I suppose Shiren’s tops as far as roguelikes go on consoles; every time I look at it though I just think Angband is so much more my thing. ^ _^

something i specifically love about the shiren games is how much they make shiren (and also asuka) a part of the worlds they inhabit, and they use the cyclical nature of roguelikes to do that.

you keep re-visiting the same villages and your relationships with the locals develop over time, and you see their lives progress, too. for example: the restaurant in the first shiren game that starts out as a failing business with crappy food, but every time you go back to eat there and give them feedback they get a little better.

i don’t think you get that kind of thing in more traditional roguelikes, or even in series that came after shiren.

Yeah, one of the selling points or turn-offs of traditional roguelikes is that they don’t really give you any story stuff to think about or click through or whatever beyond maybe the basic set-up of where you are, who you are, who the big baddie is, what they’ve done, and what you have to do to take them down–later more elaborate variants would introduce side quests for extra items and stuff that would have their own little plot set-ups in a style similar to the main one. And NPCs if anything just have canned random phrases or tips. So that’s definitely a big difference with Shiren.

Huh I don’t think I’d even heard of this one back when I was foolishly collecting PC Engine fighting games 19 years ago. ^ _^

I like a couple tracks–or well maybe just the female vocalist on these:

Nothing to write home about I suppose, but pleasant. And I think I overlooked it in the OST, but the over-the-top male vocalist on at least one racing track sounds fun in-game ^ _^:
