First ep of For All Mankind is pretty good, I love the space stuff.
The character drama is starting to get a little hokey the more they have to age up the actors. I don’t think it was the greatest idea to keep the same cast season to season.
Highlights: Them touching on space tourism, space debris, space mining, and generally the logistics of big space projects.
Fake Venture Bros is back to tide me over until they finish animating the real one. I have managed to avoid Court of Owls stories in every single medium but I guess I will experience one
they have very poorly retconned superman and lois as not taking place in the arrowverse which for a show whose premise was setup in an arrowverse episode and has brought in arrowverse characters is incredibly funny
like the actual plot and how they deal with the kryptonians makes more sense now that uh supergirl didn’t happen(?) but i gotta say that is a wild move like Frasier saying he never heard of cheers 50 episodes in lol
So mad this is going to exist. If ANY comic should have never been adapted this was the one.
It was always a writer focused book and I think gaiman is writing and show running this, so I imagine it’ll be fine.
I mean maybe it’ll even fix the weird racism throughout and have a better ending for Wanda then ‘died as a consequence of a cis girl growing up’ if they ever get to A Game of You.

Like 30 different pencilers worked on Sandman, that’s not an artist-driven book.
(Of course, many of those artists are great comics artists, but Sandman was never ‘theirs’, it was always Gaiman’s)
That was part of the vision through to have these artists interpret the characters in new visions and styles.
That’s why I think it’s odd to adapt to something like TV where you have things much more set in a look, because of the nature of using fleshy people.
Each artist was selected with story in mind, in a way that elevated so I guess I took issue with the potential diminishing of their contribution, but that doesn’t sound like the intent.
Tatiana Maslany and Mark Ruffalo are fundamentally such good actors that even covered in cgi their cousin chemistry in She-Hulk works great.

im watching sandman w/ very little knowledge of the source material
i think it’s pretty good, i appreciate at least that it has a slightly different episode structure and pacing than the typical streaming show format these days, but it doesn’t always work.
david thewlis is really great in it (much better use of him than his bizarre role in wonder woman) but the character itself is so unpleasant that i kind of hope he never comes back after the diner episode where he makes everyone kill themselves
i do wonder why the sandman has to be such a downer all the time, i’m told there is some kind of in canon explanation for this that would spoil it if revealed but i don’t really care. the actor does a good job but its just kind of a flat character.
the episode where he and death arbitrarily make a guy immortal to see what would happen is my favorite so far but i wish they had made it its own entire hour-length episode instead of just the second half of one with a basically unrelated story before it
anyway it’s walking this line between being a fully serialized story and a more episodic/anthology style thing, which, again, is interesting because it’s different but not entirely successful imo. i get that the comic was probably sort of similar but it’s not like more radical changes to narrative structure haven’t been made with these things.
i’m a sucker for literally anything that talks about how Lucifer was God’s favourite angel or whatever, especially when Gwendoline Christie is involved, but i’m a little disappointed the main actor just kind of looks like a young Gaiman impersonator. i was expecting some gaunt weirdo. also the rest of it so far (i think we’ve just watched the episode after the diner one) is quite sappy and smarmy in that Gaiman way, which i mean, does what it says on the tin i guess

she-hulk the tv show really is just like she-hulk the comic in that it is a funny little meta thing i can enjoy while mostly ignoring the rest of the universe. the one superhero thing i can never get enough of, especially in live action is the street level minutia of the celebrity culture and public reaction to superheroes. i mean from everything i hear the boys is probably smarter and funnier and looks better while handling some of the same territory but i am not currently in the mood for hyperviolence or dramatic stakes i guess. i am fine watching something that is basically at the level of “new girl with modern jokes” i mean it needs some actual sitcom character dynamics cuz right now it’s kind of a one liner delivery system but anyway they should bring back the tick instead
Having a character watch the Sopranos in last week’s episode of She Hulk felt really icky to me, like Disney was saying that all of their competitors’ IP could essentially be treated as belonging to them. Felt like a direct snipe at HBO Max and HBO’s “important” shows being over a decade old. I’m sure they just got a sync licene to “Woke Up This Morning” and decided to use it in the most crass way possible. Feels gross the same way Chip N Dale having the bad CGI Sonic design as a minor character. Just really unclean on the inside sort of feeling that seems to go with a lot of Disney properties lately, especially Star Wars stuff.

mcu referencing the sopranos is definitely less cool than mcu referencing superman
but it is kind of of a piece with the ‘nothing really matters’ attitude of the rest of the show, so i’m kind of into it.
i still think it would be 10x better as an animated series though
