i know a lot of people on here have already written off everything marvel related (for good reason, i guess) but just want to let you know the animation in the What If series is like… weird enough to make it sort of worth watching.
they are doing the thing common in cartoons these days (dragon prince, star wars resistance, probably some others) where the whole thing looks like a cut scene from a video game that is attempting to look like hand drawn animation but isn’t, but whoever is in charge of animating the action scenes has a much better sense of weight and momentum than in any of these other serieses.
i feel like the fleischer superman cartoons must have been a reference point, but in a really abstract way.
narratively it is likely to irritate you almost more than any other marvel thing has so far, and the facial expressions are still kind of janky looking, but on the level of bodies moving in space it is pretty good. find some animated gifs of the action sequences i guess.
oh also if you have seen the trailer and dismissed it because of that, they don’t show any of the good sequences in the trailers.

my partner tried to show me the dragon prince and i couldn’t make it through the first episode, idk if it was shoddy interpolation or full key frames but it was just awful to watch. feel like i haven’t seen that style done better than Dorohedoro yet. i don’t wanna watch this one but how’s it compare to that?

It’s a lot better, in my opinion. The Dragon Prince also improves a bit in the second season too, but it’s still a little disorienting to watch. I can’t put my finger on how it is different exactly, it’s less choppy looking.
What If doesn’t have that kind of stilted feel to it… it is like… very high fps by comparison if that makes sense. It’s more that same look of being 3D models that are textured to look like 2D drawings.
Sorry if my explanations don’t make sense, I know literally nothing about how this stuff is actually made.

Genlock is way way better than it has any right to be considering how bad RWBY is. The premise (quantum brain dumps in giant robots) and identity exploration is also executed better than I’d ever expect from something contemporary. The big knock is that the worldbuilding is flimsy which, well.
I’m excited to see it developed outside of Rooster Teeth for a second season.
