I don’t always remember AV Club’s reviewers being such hacks, but something changed over the last few years where now they’ll slap an A on every episode of every major HBO show, no matter what. Out of curiosity I checked their review for the latest Watchmen and the guy literally just fawned over how genius every moment of the episode was. I couldn’t wrap my head around it.
I also remember reading an NPR review of the first six eps, before the first one was even released, and god was that full of red flags the reviewer refused to face:
The result is a visually stunning, energetically complex series that digs into the hottest social issue of our time. But it’s done in a way that may leave viewers unsure exactly what Lindelof is saying about it all.
It’s not obvious, even after watching the first six episodes provided to critics, why Lindelof chose to center so much of this new Watchmen story on race. If he’s making some larger point beyond the obvious depictions of racial resentment, the resilience of racism or liberals’ ham-handed solutions, it escaped me.
But that choice does allow for many cool moments.
HBO’s new Watchmen presents a reality where the only heroes left are masked police officers, hunted in ways people of color once were – and, sometimes, still are.

Honestly this show has been so weird to try to figure out from a distance. I have seen a handful of people who are utterly repulsed by it but not read any in-depth explanations of why outside of a few posts ITT (or maybe in the tv general thread?). But also a lot of people seem to be pretty entranced with it and think it is handling the racism in a way that is genuinely thought provoking and well thought out. I am weirdly grateful that its possible for something to exist that is so genuinely divisive, but also completely exhausted by the thought of trying to watch it and make up my own mind about it.

My favorite thing about this show so far has been seeing various nerds on the internet who hate Alan Moore, but not for any of the perfectly valid reasons one might have for that, but because he won’t approve of their movie versions.

also they made an adam and steve joke because satan and cain had to go undercover as a gay couple and cain said his dad would not approve

It was wild hearing (and seeing) Frank Miller’s words coming out of Kevin Conroy’s mouth.
I’m going to be the person on the forum to say that the Watchmen TV show is fucking brilliant.
I’ve heard wildly differing feedback from people I trust but luckily I understand that you need to have some familiarity with the source material to fully appreciate it and watchmen has always been squarely in the realm of “I guess I see why people like this but I just don’t care at all” so I think I’m off the hook
I am absolutely on the complete opposite side one this one, where I’m consistently floored by how completely they misread the comic and how eye-rolling all the twists are, but I do enjoy hate-watching it at this point. One episode to go for them to wrap it all up.
But, a lot of people love it, so, que sera, sera.
