Yes, I don’t think audio logs can mix with volume triggers; a game must pick one or the other, just as a game with walk 'n talks should always end them by returning to player control to avoid this sort of fear.

i tried to play ss1 once and bounced right off the control scheme

how much does one lose by watching longplays / no-mic LP’s of these things

I could turn the pages in this book so much faster if they didn’t put so many words on them

Doesn’t the gog version of SS1 have a massively improved control scheme? Or am I misremembering that?

I think that’s just the aforementioned Mac UI, which came out all of four months later in 1994, which is why I spent so much of this thread talking about System Shock’s legacy vis a vis the Macintosh Quadra

(but yes it might still be better than the version you’re familiar with!)

There’s an enhanced edition on GOG where you can toggle a WASD +mouselook mode with the E button. Not sure what else it changes

What is a first person immersive sim?

I always thought of System Shock as FPS Metroid.

it’s a made up genre that people originally applied to Deus Ex, then retroactively appended to System Shock. now it’s just a thing for people to use when they don’t want to design their video game, so they throw in audio logs and call it a genre convention. it ostensibly indicates a linear first person game with some kind of progression system and enough mechanical systems to allow for various ways to complete necessary objectives.

True, unless we mean immersion to meant that you care at all about what’s happening in the game. But I always thought that immersion is a step further from caring, where it goes so far that you forget everything around you

I guess it also depends on the genre. Horror doesn’t really do what it’s supposed to do if you’re too detatched to be scared, so immersion is necessary there

Superhot is the rare VR video game that explicitly engages in ostranenie. I bet russian formalists would have had a field day talking about that game. It is brechtian in its approach to narrative. No suspension of disbelief, an encouragement in disbelief.

VR is so suited for it! I am obsessed with this sphere of literary modes (and I think Superhot’s narrative noodling is closer to college literary pranskterism than conerted reality deconstruction) so I’m very disappointed it’s thin on the ground in the medium capable and explicitly suited to disturbing your senses.

yeah, college literary pranksterism is about right. Its a game that doesn’t really have anything to say even though the techniques it uses to say nothing are excellent

Absolutely – they have enough tone control and raw style that, given someone with something to say, they could do something spectacular.

I’m most happy in VR with non-photorealistic rendering. Combining the authoritative sensory input of VR with surfaces that glimmer and sheen in ways that just can’t be is magical and can be pushed so much further
