Switch! (Part 2)

the switch sports character creator apparently also has furry options and now i’m wondering if the funny animal maker will be deeper than sonic forces

At least you can make clothes the options in Wheel of Fortune 201X are the worst white person at applebee’s options.

I hope they don’t bill these things as #mii2

I should follow up that Nintendo still offers the voucher two-pack on the Japanese eshop for about 10k yen (90-100 USD) and that they can still be used on new/unreleased Nintendo games

make sure to check to the languages supported in the info at the bottom of the store page; the universal SKUs will list every language whereas regional SKUs will have Japanese only or Asian languages only (a good comparison is Xenoblade 2 and Xenoblade DE; 2 is Japanese only whereas DE is every language and most likely registers on all eshops)

Recently started having really bad drift in one of my joycons to the point of unplayabillity, probably because of a hard drop a few months ago, and I’ve been looking into replacements but… are Nintendo really selling these things for 80 dollars? Surely there are decent third party ones that are the same for way cheaper, or at least pricy for decent reasons, ie less likely to shred my thumbs and wrists?

No, it’s a fucking racket and Nintendo has no incentive to ever fix it

I was able to successfully replace just the joystick in my drifty joycon. It’s a little bit fiddly, there are some delicate connectors, but if the stick is already busted you’re not risking much. I got a two pack of sticks for like $10 off ebay and I haven’t had a problem with it yet, though admittedly I only use the joycons when traveling and I haven’t exactly been doing a lot of that lately

Classic Nintendo.
Well its a good thing I already have a little trihead screwdriver from when I was replacing all my gamecube controller sticks many years back

I like the Hori split pad pro for ergo reasons but they only cover handheld mode functionality i.e. don’t have their own batteries or radios. They do use full-size potentiometers so wear should be less of a concern

FWIW Nintendo has a free few-questions-asked RMA program for joycons here:

https://joyconrepair.nintendo.com/

I compulsively do teardowns on everything I own and would still opt to RMA them for free, they’re a pain to work with

Yeah thanks for that, I just opened it up and saw how many parts you need to detach to replace the joystick module and it seems like a huge pain.
Luckily I was able to get the spring which came loose from the L3 button out and that + recalibration seems to mostly have fixed the issue.
This hori pad looks pretty much what I would want for an upgrade since I’m mostly interested in better ergonomics handheld mode anyway so I might get a pair to use on flights and such.

I went to GameStop, traded in Pokémon Sword, and preordered Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

What year is it?

Just sold Shield to do the same.

I’ve had OK luck with the latest Binbok joycons.

The dead zones on them are wonky for some games and not others, for whatever reason, but they’re cheaper than the real deal and work alright. They apparently drain the Switch in sleep mode, though, so, something to keep in mind.

(One nice thing about them as that they do all the stuff regular Joycons do, except NFC/infrared. They can also wake the system up when it’s docked, which is nice.)

That price though

I wonder if the headset jack is just for voice chat, or if it works like a USB DAC and passes through all of the audio.

I can kinda do that with my Roku remote if I don’t want to be too loud playing stuff at night, but I think there’s a little bit of a delay.

huh, there’s an early, running (no games yet) compatibility-layer for running Vita apps on Switch natively, now. neat.

That 3D Kirby game has a demo up on the e-shop now, but despite my strong interest I can not and will not tear myself away from Elden Ring to play it. Any impressions from anyone who has tried it?

The demo feels like Kirby’s Adventure a la Mario 3D World to me. I’ve only played the first level. Seems nice, but I think it’s lacking some kinda kinetic feedback when landing blows with the sword ability. It’s a bit weird that some ledges have invisible walls and some let you fall off the stage and take damage.

I played it co-op as the bandanna wearing Waddle Dee. It was neat just how many moves they had, but they still couldn’t absorb power-ups and would automatically teleport to Kirby if there was too much distance between them. It felt kind of like a 3D version of playing as Tails in Sonic 2.

It was really easy as a co-op game and I bet it would also be pretty easy playing alone except for the boss fights, so the balancing mirrors almost every other Kirby game. I was surprised to see little achievements for the stages. It reminds me of Kirby’s Dreamland 3, and I hope that they get more idiosyncratic as the game progresses.

I think it’s ultimately a lot like other Kirby games. If you go into it just wanting to luxuriate in the space, you can have a really good time, but it’s not going to be as snappy or challenging as Mario.

Yeah, the demo is pretty cute. Not sure why I thought it was going to be an open world game for so long, but it’s…pleasant? Refreshing?

Might pick it up at some point if Nintendo decides to lower it to the fire sale price of $50.
