so yesterday worked out pretty nicely because i had the day off and the Switch 2 said it was going to be delivered by noon. i sat outside on my stoop trying to finish a biography on Jack Parsons for about two hours, which was nice. the UPS guy was unusually friendly and we chatted for about 10 to 15 mins about the city and neighborhoods he’d lived in. sorry to whoever else was waiting for their Switch 2.
yesterday i also received my new Macbook Air (i cracked because i found a good deal), so i spent most of the time i had setting up new tech and taking down old tech, rather than actually playing.
i did play, though!
Super Mario Kart World - i mostly agree with everyone’s sentiments here, both positive and negative. if they were going to copy Forza, then they should have really gone all the way. why am i not ALWAYS driving on the open world? why don’t i see other people on the road who are also playing the game? that would have been a real nice “wow we all bought a Switch 2 today” moment. game plays really nicely, though, and Knockout mode is pretty neat. i tried playing online a few times last night and couldn’t make it past the third or fourth rounds, but it was a good time. idk - everyone just seems faster than me, already lol
Welcome Tour - it was $10 and i agree with everyone that it should probably have just been a pack-in game, but it was $10 so i got it. it’s cute and i played for about 10 mins before moving on. i’ll have to give it more time when i feel like reading a lot about the Switch 2. it has the “comfy professional Nintendo” vibe
Deltarune - lol well i mean it’s a launch day game, right? it picked up my save data from my unfinished playthrough of Chapter 1, but turns out i was at the final boss of that chapter, so now i’m at the start of Chapter 2; neat. (edit: actually wait, i do think i beat chapter 1 before, but i guess it doesn’t save that you beat it?)
Ridge Racer (arcade) - so it turns out i’ve never actually played Ridge Racer in the arcades. did it only have one camera angle??? game rules.
a 2000 word essay about how the food items guaranteeing first place a speed boost is a blight on the normally restrained and pragmatic item distribution amongst ranks in Mario Kart races:
What do you all think about the mouse controls? I only messed around with them a little bit to browse the shop, but I’m not impressed… The joycons really don’t feel ergonomic to me when holding them like a mouse. It’s hard to figure out a good grip.
I SEE YOU CHEATIN ROSALINA
YOU SHAMELESS COSMIC BITCH
I’M ON TO YOU
family’s gettin’ too full for that (we already have one that’s tied to a nintendo account; this is her second one)
i bought welcome tour and i want to like it but this stamp rally shit sucks and i wish it was cuter and/or weirder
man, it’s kinda wild they didn’t try to make nightreign a launch title for switch 2, considering they got elden ring on there
EDIT since I’ve already triple-posted:
i’m still baffled that they haven’t launched any alternate joy con color configurations.
this virtual game card system is actually kind of annoying the piss out of me (EDIT again: maybe it’s actually not so bad and I just need to rethink how i’m managing the 3 systems we have lol)
Gonna be a cottage industry of people 3D printing mouse-shaped joycon holders and selling them on Etsy
I just checked my Target preorder and to my surprise it looks like my Switch 2 will arrive today. I haven’t finished a Switch game since Metroid Dread so I have quite a few games that’ll be new to me when I fire it up.
- Metroid Prime Remastered (Top Priority)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Bowser’s Fury
- Luigi’s Mansion 3
- Fire Emblem: Three Houses
- Super Mario RPG
- Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
that chat button is way too fucki*g easy to hit by accident
I don’t know, this is a bit of a pain in the ass. Nintendo could’ve tried harder to maintain exact compatibility
all of my non 8bitdo 3rd party controllers have been working out of the box so I think it’s something weird they in particular did
anyway I have now unlocked mariachi waluigi, mohawk waluigi, and gotten gold on rainbow road, so that’s nice
my feelings on this are pretty much the same as yesterday:
- the open world is a hilarious scam
- as a Mario Kart, it’s pretty good, and gets better as the later tracks get more inspired. I have no doubt it will have 3x as many tracks in a few years.
- it’s a little surprising they didn’t have more in the tank game-wise to launch this platform with, given that it’s a years old tegra chipset they finally got to market etc etc
- I can’t remember the last time I bought a console on launch day if I ever did, but honestly, I also can’t remember the last console I bought that was fully hardware and software back compatible and which I received an email to buy and get delivered day and date; it feels like they successfully engineered out any advantages of waiting to buy one of these things a year or two from now as I normally do.
I think the value is fine-to-good and the upgrade feels earned, it’s that Mario Kart has in no way grown in scope
Mario Kart World is a fine $50 videogame, glad I bought it before it inexplicably costs $120.
No one needed to tell us and we were going to do it anyway!
I’ve had my Nintendo order for 24 hours
I have not gotten a shipping confirmation email yet
I need the comedy option of a second shipment and then realizing and charging me again
this is what i was hoping for today, i have 2 8bitdo pro 2s so hopefully this works
Downloading every single switch game I previously owned turns out to just barely fill up the storage so I guess I gotta get a microSD express
oh forgot to mention this: the HDR calibrator is terrible? or maybe the HDR itself is bad?
i played around with it enough to make things look pretty good, but still feels imperfect to me
