The best argument I’ve heard for this thing so far are people saying various games that struggled are running (mostly) perfectly fine, if only looking kinda soft since the screen is 1080 and a lot of games I guess targeted 720.
Those sickos who turned their Animal Crossing islands into insane packed landscapes you gotta sidle through can rejoice, since apparently the game as a whole loads quicker and runs a lot more smoothly.
my problem with any enthusiast press or media comparing the Switch 2 with handheld PCs is the Switch 2 is going to outsell the non-Deck segment by the end of the day and most likely will clear the Deck’s sales in a month, if not today
the markets aren’t comparable
anyway I like my Deck, it’s ain’t leaving my bag anytime soon. the two systems can live together safely, especially since handheld PCs are more likely than not a value add and not the main gaming PC (although hey more power to you if you roll like that, I don’t fucking blame you)
Elden Ring comparison is apt. The open world seems neat and well-designed, but I’d rather just have levels/courses. Hopefully it doesn’t mean new content is that much harder to add.
I need 200cc. The connecting routes, which are simpler, would benefit a lot from it.
The new Grand Prix format isn’t great because of those routes, but I like them more in Knockout Tour.
Visually overwhelming at first, especially on a big TV. There’s a lot going on in the track and even more going on around it. Sometimes my eyes don’t know where to look when I take a ramp.
There’s more texture and grit and lighting and effects. I prefer the cleaner look of Mario Kart 8 and I guess the last generation of games so far.
I forgot to enable game mode on my TV and thought this played like garbage for a solid 90 minutes.
Free roam is dumb and fun. If I was a kid, this would be my summer.
Jump tricks seem interesting. You have to charge your jump to start wall-riding or grinding or whatever – and those let you get a lot of boosts – but you need to be driving straight for a bit to get that charge. Start late and you’ll just hit the wall (or a car).
Lot of random music. They did not take the Breath of the Wild approach with it.
Yeah, I think they need to change the online Race mode so that you’re just driving on named tracks. I’m nodding off en route, then really enjoying my short time on the track, then it’s over.
Watching some high ranking time trial ghosts. I lost to the first staff ghost by a second just driving and drifting, but people are already beating it by 10 seconds using rail riding and charge jumps and such.
Lol, turns out mine arrived today too, with the accessories I ordered too. It still says “Preparing to ship” on the Nintendo site. Weird but I’ll take it! Give my regards to Douglas Bowser.
So Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires does appear to run much better on Switch 2. The Digital Foundry live stream today also confirms that many games have improved performance without any kind of patch.
I also am surprised that I don’t notice 720p->1080p scaling issues when playing Switch 1 games in handheld mode. But maybe my old eyeballs just can’t discern the difference.
Pokemon Violet at 60 FPS with more Pokemon spawning in the overworld is a game changer. I caught 4 shiny Porygon2s in half an hour, just standing in a field and seeing acres of Smolivs and Porygons - it’s so nice with no slowdown.
I hoped maybe Brilliant Diamond might’ve gotten a stealth upgrade too but nah, it’s still running the same.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S is exactly the same game as the previous one lol. It does have more music though? And you can set the Tetris pieces to be Gameboy monotone gray. I only ever play Sprint mode in the game though so I don’t know if there’s a new Story Mode or anything else. Oh it added Game Chat and Game Share integration?
Some of my third party Switch controllers didn’t work or were just a giant pain in the ass to sync. Maybe that’s up to third parties to figure out though?
Mario Kart is fun! The last Mario Kart I played was on the SNES so I was in a world of difference. I was really confused trying to find the free roam mode and eventually found out it doesn’t really exist by itself, it’s only accessible when mucking around online? All I want is to find burger shops to unlock more outfits, dangit.
