hope there is also an in universe sequel show to crying breakfast friends
The intro is by Takafumi Hori again, who worked on “Mindful Education” and the Spinel fights in the movie.
i watched the movie the other day!
it was alright. maybe i’m just like… not someone who needs this show anymore
the denouement was uh pretty unsatisfying
sick animation though it’s true
We’ve got the exact same take
i just rewatched the movie the other day, not long after watching all of season 5 for the second time. i kinda don’t like the denoumount either! it feels like they laid the groundwork for it in the plot, yet somehow still felt too convenient and unearned. Which isn’t dissimilar from how i feel about Change Your Mind! Hmmm
on its own it seems like the Diamonds and Spinel are the best fit to figure out their mutual abandonment issues together, but it comes off weirdly replacement goldfish and i don’t think it’s the best for Spinel! and i only want what’s the best for Spinel
and then it’s always nice to have an ending that explictly says “happy endings are a fake idea, every day brings something new to work on” but it’s at the same time such a pat and clean ending (the town’s fine, Greg’s arm’s fine, here we are in the future lol). i feel like i have to do some rounding up knowing that Future is coming out to really be cool with it.
And again kinda felt that way about CYM and season 5. i said it at the time and rewatching it didnt change my mind (hoHO) but Change Your Mind is very cool if you think of it as a season finale, and kind of a letdown if you think of it as a series finale. It’s painfully apparent rewatching it (and all of season 5 by extension) how compressed the story is to hit all the key beats and get at least the outline of the finale on screen. every single plot beat is a good idea and clearly very thoughtful and important to the themes of the series, but only half of them land with the impact they should, because the rest needed like another whole season in the oven. i can appreciate what they were going for, and the pink steven scene is maybe the best single moment in the series? buuuut
i dont subscribe to the “sugar and the crewniverse are fascist sympathizers” narrative because thats obviously bullshit. i think they wanted to tell a nuanced story about appealing to honest to god evil people and again, just kinda had to wrap it up to have a happy ending. i like the way the Diamonds are shown in the movie as kinda pathetic needy grandmas, and i like that Steven is clearly unimpressed with their bullshit. BUT they still just don’t work for me as characters i’m supposed to like. they did not get the development time they needed for any of their scenes in CYM to work for me. i actually kinda hate the moment at the end where White and Steven awkwardly smile at eachother. screw her, dude! she just tried to rip out your soul like ten minutes ago
all of those too many words aside, im glad theres gonna be at least another season (?) because the story both deserves and needs it, and im really excited by the stuff theyre focusing on in the intro because it looks like theyre going to address basically every one of my lingering story issues (i hope thats White in the intro because seriously. she sucks and shes gotta go). i think just that one more good season will satisfy my need for this series.
Also i love that the color palette in the movie and Future is immediately brighter and bolder and visibly different from the original!
oh yeah and i love Spinel and shes my favorite antagonist in the series by far. shes a character thats so made for me, like i have multiple Angsty OCs that are practically her lol
i love that she is The Movie Guest Character in every way. like… i don’t know who else to compare to except the genie from Ducktales Treasure of the Lost Lamp, but she’s that kind of “wisecracking guest star created just for the movie” exactly and i like that she knows that and hates it. Like, the fact that she is an unimportant extra no one remembered who’ll get kicked out of the status quo as soon as the movie is over is what drives her whole character, it’s great!
People have compared her to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit as portrayed in that Warren Spector game. And that was before Rebecca Sugar started to talk about her lost rabbit that she left in the garden. Then just out and cited Oswald as one of the 1920s-30s cartoon references for the character.
So uh.
(They’re taking down mirrors like mad, but you can easily find one for the fifteen minutes it will stay up.)
So, question time. Is he learning to use his chaos emerald, or is this Riot of the Light Steven?
STEVEN’S FUCKING PISSED
Whoops, I accidentally reposted again.
So, a couple of weeks now.
EDIT: It’s been clarified that this one-hour special is indeed the first four episodes back-to-back, and not, you know, a 45-minute episode. Or an indication that episodes are longer now and they’re airing two of them, or whatever.
I’m not gonna bother posting it, but there’s a dodgy screenshot of Hulu circulating around, suggesting there may be 52 episodes in this run. Which is possible, mind you; it’s almost certainly at least a normal season’s length, and they’re being very weird still about disclosing how long the show’s gonna be. But there are a million and four explanations for the screenshot besides it representing reality, so I guess we’ll just hafta see.

(Featuring two new cis-garnets.)
(And Bob.)
The story of MK Atwood is interesting: from Tumblr/YT memelord to panel host to CN social media manager and spokesperson.
Yet she still keeps doing shit like this.
eDIt:
(I actually wouldn’t be too flabbergasted if in Future there were a vague reference to Pearl’s secret rap career during that multi-year gap since the original series.)
hahaha the episode is literally about Steven returning to his birth to try to solve the mystery of his life, but i still couldn’t believe they would go all the way there until after Legs From Here to Homeworld
once you know what you’re looking at it’s pretty blatant
