If anyone ITT is sad there’s no new Lower Decks to watch this year I can recommend both of these books. They do a really good job matching the vibe of the show. Warp Your Own Way is a choose-your-own-adventure kind of deal, whereas Second Contact contains the first 6 issues of the comic they’re running now. I don’t think comics in Star Trek are considered canon but this show has ended so… who gives a shit.

It is very funny in retrospect that in episode 6 of TNG they simply travel out further into space than any ship ever does in the entire history of the franchise like they make Voyager look like a trip to the store

Which is in line with every S1 TNG episode existing in the shadow of a TOS episode, since episode 3 of TOS is about a barrier on the edge of the galaxy that prevents anything from leaving.

diane duane submitted that tng episode as an adaptation of her tos novel the wounded sky but heavily rewritten obviously. of course she fell out with the roddenberry camp over the rihannsu books soon after so that was her only time writing for tng

The premise of this book sounds extremely good.
I love that they summed it up at the end with:
The novel deals intensively with the question of whether reality is an objective thing in and of itself, or a product of conscious perception by humans and other intelligences. Like Duane’s other Star Trek novels, it incorporates both real physics and speculative extensions thereof to support the plot.

the end of the khan pod was basically moving all the pieces into place to make star trek ii make sense, but overall a really satisfying story. even knowing the “reveal” in advance did not detract from it. not that there’s a lot of competition, but also a pretty tops tuvok story for something where he’s mostly a minor character. considering this was adapted from whatever miniseries script nicholas meyer himself wrote i probably wouldn’t expect any additional scripted trek podcasts to be this good, but this does set up a pretty okay pipeline in place if they want to do doctor who style audio dramas. i’d definitely give the next one a shot at least

that first dixon hill ep of TNG really reminds me how much they retconned not just how amazing the holodeck is to everyone but also how much everything from JJ movie on mostly gave up on the roddenberrian idea that people in the future are such enlightened nerds that the present is basically an alien world. like they’ll still do the occasional fish out of water gag on modern stuff but picard is trying to remember the concept of “a city block”. beverly does not know what gum is. the conception of whatever earth is is so different in this time.

The more we learned about and saw earth in later star trek the worse it got. I love sisko’s dad and his famous restaurant but when you see something like that it’s like begging so many questions and pulling us directly back into “well I guess things aren’t so different.” like it was fine to get a glimpse of san francisco every once and a while but like honestly we should not be spending time learning about earthman society because the writers can barely conceive of humans doing anything particularly differently than we do now. welcome to star trek picard where even captain picard has to go into work and get yelled at by his boss 2025 style. that ds9 episode on earth in particular kills me because we’ve become highly enlightened but the federation is apparently so susceptible to a human military coup that the whole thing is at risk of being fucked
