Because I love a stupid impression, and making fun of the rat pack, that was a move I could somewhat respect. Sinatra consoling victims through their battle trauma. How the hell did we get here!

Yeah there are a few to look forward to yet, and a few that I’ve thought were decent. But so many of them feel like episodes that would have been awesome episodes like four two or three seasons ago.
I am also not joking at all, I like that episode bc it is one of the last and purest expressions of this “star trek can be about anything” mentality that kind of goes away after tng. But they have just enough of that tng/post tng sci fi sensibility to do a small amount of world building to explain why there is a Planet Scotland. Plus even though the execution is uhhh flawed I actually find it to be a reasonably sincere attempt to look at the sex lives of female characters from their own perspectives, not just as objects of desire. I found this to be a weirdly persistent theme of the show which kind of surprised me. I don’t think they ever really did it all that well, but this is one of the least bad of all of them, precisely because it just drives straight in to pulp romance novel tropes. More genre tv should try to do this sort of shit imo

Deep Space nine does a not terrible job of this from that angle, though it’s hard to filter through knowing how much Berman seemingly hates women.
DS9 also has a lot of “Star Trek can be about anything” episodes too though, I’d say. Even deep into its story arcs (baseball? The James Bond episode? Honey I shrunk the Shuttle? Basically anything involving the holographic lounge singer?)

Alien ghost sexual vampire that seduces multiple generations of women in the same family is a very good premise actually! And the scene where Crusher tells Picard I’m sorry but I have to fuck this green mist no matter the cost is very good tv acting

The season didn’t seem noticeably bad overall when I was watching it for the first time a few months ago, but looking back on the episode list of that season there are very few I remember fondly! And even the good ones have at least one thing about them that just really sucks. It’s crazy that Data is such a great character but almost everything with Lore just feels completely half assed. Bizarre!
The Star Trek deep thought I’ve been having lately is that in The Present Moment the most interesting treatment of AI in TNG is not anything to do with Data, but rather in the holodeck episodes, specifically the ones about the holodeck itself and not those about programs that become sentient or whatever. With most of the android or sentient program episodes, it seems like the Point is that the audience already knows that they are “really” humans even if the characters are uncertain or unconvinced. But the holodeck/ship computer is still treated like a machine even when it performs as though it’s sentient (for the most part, or at least by the end of the episode the characters are still not really sure what the hell is going on). Those ones are much more interesting to me! Especially the one where the holodeck turns itself into a train to explain itself to people lol

I know there’s probably bigger issues here, but I’m sorry, I can’t turn this off, they decided that Starfleet is in San Francisco 35 years ago, and this means I have to look at these city shots and just ask why?
Based in the long shot from Starfleet the Richmond and Sunset are still full of single family homes… but that’s an unbroken sheet of light, which means that they paved over Golden Gate Park. Also, the sun is setting in the south.
OK, I’ll grant you the Hyatt Regency lasting into the 23rd century, it’s one of the few buildings left in SF that looks like it belongs in Star Trek. But where’s the Embarcaderos? You’re telling me that of the landsend buildings One Market Plaza survived to the Star Trek current day and the Embarcaderos were what got torn down? Bullshit.
Also on both shots there are for some reason still paved roads, and Market street still has paint for cars, so where are they? Do they maintain the roads just for someone’s uncle to drive his vintage mustang around? Why isn’t Market street just an open air market? They already close down that intersection on Sundays for an open air market!
