Caught up on SNW
The war documentary one was pretty meh. I don’t really give a shit about Ortegas’s brother? And the entire plot was completely obvious within the first 5 minutes. The space butterfly thing was pretty at least.
Four-and-a-half Vulcans was extremely silly but what the hell, let’s have fun. The actors all clearly were! The vulcanized crew was always going to end up causing chaos on the ship but the speed at which they finished their mission and how miffed the rest of the crew were was a good bit. So was the opening voiceover in Anson Mount’s hammiest Vulcan voice. Wish there had been more to the Una/Doug romance than isn’t it funny that hot woman likes goofy guy?? Still don’t care about Ortegas’s brother, don’t think him and Uhura are an interesting couple and the show could stand to cut down on the romance subplots a bit.
Ortegas makes a Gorn friend was a great ep, though cheapened a bit by the need to tie it into the TOS episode at the end. Enjoyed all the space VFX.

whoever is a huge fan of mccoy racistly insulting spock for his mixed heritage needs to stop being allowed to write episodes though it’s so excessive lmao. the original show is down right subtle in exploring his character comparatively. also don’t know what to make of like half the women on the enterprise banging him at least once either. I love Spock but they’re operating at levels I cannot even fathom
the real problem with this season is because it’s mandated to be 10 episodes only there are wayyy too many gimmick episodes imo

I haven’t watched the new episodes yet, but this is how I feel about some of the older ones (such as the storybook one). I came away thinking not that this is a clever scenario or a good story, but only that it must have been fun for the actors. And that’s the only positive thing I can really say about it.
(The musical one kind of transcended that, though, because they put so much work into it and the result was impressive even though it was very dumb if you think about it.)

It was better than the storybook one but only a bit, at least in this one the non-Spock characters theoretically got some perspective on Vulcan-ness while the storybook one was very “other shows get big costume budgets we want one too!!”

I ended up just kinda… skipping the documentary one and the vulcan one, I’ll get back to them.
I am absolutely here for an Enemy Mine ep, especially centering on Ortegas! Hell yeah!!! I jumped to Terrarium the moment I heard the premise.
Largely, I liked it quite a bit. All the practical stuff about her macgyvering together gizmos to drink her own piss, her talking to herself to not go crazy, wandering a dead, horrible moon, I loved it. I also am a big fan of the decision to have her encounter a wounded, non-xenomorph Gorn. The device she rigged up to give Yes/No answers was a lot of fun, I wished they’d gotten there sooner. So yeah, loved all of that.
Then we have perhaps the biggest 11th-hour fumble since Zebulon showed up in the last minute of Future Imperfect: A fucking energy being did this?? Because it’s the other gorn TOS ep?? And they kill the female gorn because it would be too hard to figure out what happens next?? Are you shitting me with this?
Ugh. Really soured me on it. I guess I hope this isn’t the end of Ortagas’ gorn storyline here but I kind of fear it is.

I felt like the what the fuck do you want from me??? breakdown was a great climax and then some smug guy shows up in a fucking toga and immediately ruins it. Just… a bad, bad time to pull out a cheesy TOS costume and then undo the entire episode’s worth of pathos in 30 seconds.

Insane, insane decision. I think in hindsight this “explains” a bunch of dumb little plot holes that I completely forgave in the moment, since it’s all an experiment by goofy TOS aliens.
It’s torture for me because I love Ortegas character, she’s capable and fallable and mean and funny, just a great choice to carry a solo survival ep. I love the gorn puppet, the speaking mechanism, the dynamic between the two, how they’re broken survivors and they’re determined to survive, all of that. Clearly the episode is at least mostly about that. Then that ending tells us into the barrel of the camera that actually it’s about this new character the whole time. Ortegas even reacts properly, with a huge amount of “who the fuck are you, you are fool, I don’t care” energy, as if the script was not expecting this to happen? Why have the character appear at all?
Still can’t quite believe that happened. The closest thing I can think of in SNW is when M’Benga’s daughter’s disease was resolved by her turning into a being of pure energy and experiencing three lifetimes in a blink of an eye. Why?
“It’s something TOS would have done” is not a valid answer sorry, that’s just for cute touches here and there.
Woof, New Life and New Civilizations was overall pretty rough. Truly everything involving the ghost aliens was like shockingly terrible, I couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing and hearing anytime they were the focus.
But! Some good in there too. Batel and Pike’s vision of their future was genuinely affecting, I enjoyed that a lot. The biz with Spock and Kirk was fairly fun, nice seeing them spending time together without it feeling too too forced. Pelia got a bunch of fun lines, the costuming was amazing, loved the weird dual-ship maneuver they did…
This season definitely was not one of their better ones overall. A good number of eps spent doing things that could happen in any show, not really taking advantage of this being Star Trek. I think Adventure Hour was a fun mystery with this cast, but did it need to take up one of the ten episodes we get a season? Same with the zombie episode, and the wedding one.
The standout for me was The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail, which was a very strange, fun, well-characterized story that was very Star Trek. Terrarium was also something I enjoyed a lot, if you can ignore the remarkably bad ending. Though I think Babylon 5 did it much better, I liked the documentary episode for at the least asking many questions that the civilian population would have of Starfleet.
Has me a little worried for the next season, but, hopes up!

yeah, SNW has not been great this year. the ghost aliens were so stock. 4.5 Vulcans was like everyone got speed/benzo drips in their pointy ears. and the ending of Terrarium was … blurv

lol star trek khan is pretty good, in episode 3 they sort of get an idea of how the ceti alpha eels work, it’s because khan is trying to get back to camp to save a guy who’s got one in his ear, he tells him to get out of a tree and the guy just jumps out of the tree breaking his legs immediately

we watched an episode of TOS that opened with this shot today
and my best friend immediately said “Everyone’s having chem-sex on infra-sensory drugs these days.” which is one of the most cyberpunk novel sentences I’ve ever heard another human utter out loud.
Dagger of the Mind ftw one of the few early season 1 TOS episodes that is good with no caveats (most of them are insanely misogynist)

the combat footage they showed looks like the really boring fights from the star trek fleet command gacha game where you mostly just have to watch shit play out with minimal input which is unfortunate. Also not a fan of the fallout shelter stuff.
I also think the UI looks really bad and oversized like it’s for a phone. The only games this developer has made are literally asterix and obelix themed mobile games too, they made a clash of clans clone, a idle game and a ccg lol.
But good luck to them honestly even if it looks bad I’ll play it if it’s fun, I can get over a lot

Lol star trek khan episode 4 has the historian lady in the framing story be like “So what, when the Reliant showed up to the system they just forgot there were supposed to be six planets? Or they couldn’t count?” WHICH WAS MY EXACT REACTION WATCHING THE MOVIE AGAIN RECENTLY WHEN CHEKOV IS SURPRISED THAT THEY’RE ON CETI ALPHA V. He acts like he didn’t even know they were in the Ceti Alpha system!!
