So this year I’ve been trying to focus on two games a month, one on handheld for my commute and one on console at home, so a few of the things on my backlog are already planned to be played later this year:

3DS

  • Captain Toad Treasure Tracker - playing this month, almost done
  • Fire Emblem Echoes - planned for June-July
  • Etrian Odyssey Untold 2 - planned for September-November
  • Monster Hunter 4
  • Youkai Watch 3 Sukiyaki

DS

  • Dragon Quest V - played February-March, stuck on a boss battle, very near completion
  • Kirby Canvas Curse - intentionally playing slowly so I have something to play when I’m too depressed to get out of bed
  • Mega Man Zero 1 - planned for May
  • Mega Man Zero 2 - planned for August
  • Mega Man Zero 3 - planned for December
  • Final Fantasy Tactics A2
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness
  • SaGa 2 Hihou Densetsu

PS Vita

  • Dragon Quest Builders - I think this game made me realize even DQ can’t salvage Minecraft-type games for me? Should probably give this to someone.
  • EVE burst error R
  • The Idolmaster Must Songs Aka-ban
  • The Idolmaster Must Songs Ao-ban
  • Superbeat Xonic
  • White Album 2 -closing chapter- - look I love sad visual novels, but where am I going to find the 50 hours to devote to this?

PSP

  • Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles
  • Mashiroiro Symphony: Mutsu no Hana - this week in Sakurina buys visual novels entirely based on banger opening theme remixes, at least this one is quite short

PS4

  • Astro Bot Rescue Mission - love this game so much I’m pacing myself so it isn’t over too soon
  • Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy - mostly interested in finishing Warped, was stuck on a dumb vehicle level last time I played it around Christmas
  • YU-NO Remake - I think I fucked up getting a PS4 version of a visual novel instead of Vita :frowning:
  • Ace Combat 5
  • Ace Combat 7
  • (edit: oh yeah I guess Bloodborne is also here)
  • Caladrius Blaze
  • DARIUSBURST Chronicle Saviors
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR
  • Monster Hunter World
  • Nioh
  • Persona 5
  • Superhot VR
  • Yakuza Kiwami

PS2

  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
  • Monster Hunter Dos
  • Persona 3 FES
  • Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song
  • Sakura Taisen 3
  • Twinkle Star Sprites (as part of ADK Damashii)

PS1

  • Brave Fencer Musashi - planned for July
  • Final Fantasy VII International - planned for August
  • Final Fantasy VIII - currently playing
  • Racing Lagoon

Computer stuff

(honestly, I should ditch this entire category because I don’t fucking want to play games on a computer ever)

  • Blue Revolver - I am so on board with this shooter but I feel like a fraud for not being able to beat it even on the easiest difficulty
  • Flywrench - I have a note saying I am 91% complete, so should I just be content with making it this far into a weird masocore game when I suck at video games?
  • The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind - why do I do this to myself, not only do I not want to play PC games, but I have zero tolerance for WRPG jank
  • ZeroRanger - now that my game jam prep is over, I can finally return to playing this on my lunch break

(also you can follow along at home on my backloggery if you are so inclined)

i don’t usually have a ‘backlog’ but… now i do

  • shenmue 2
  • bayonetta - have never played more than an hour or two of this but replaying revengeance has me fiendin’ for some more platinum
  • yakuza kiwami 1 & 2 - bought these on launch but found i was majorly burned out on 'kuza after mainlining 0 and 6 in quick succession
  • terranigma - one of the few notable snes jarpegs i haven’t played
  • resident evil 6
  • observer, soma & kentucky route zero - @Felix games given away by the team at twitch dot tv
  • one day i will get around to playing morrowind

i also plan to give prey (2017) another shot and finish thief gold after 20 years

I don’t really have a backlog, just a handful of games I’d like to spend more time with at some point, i.e.,

  • still never did the witness challenge but previous attempts to pick it back up and try to clear the village haven’t been too much fun
  • I like to check in with siege every few months because it’s such a dynamic game
  • I’ve never learnt how warfare works in ck2 to the point of being able to play that part of the game at all well
  • I was going to play the DBFZ story mode when I got into MK11 all of a sudden
  • I’m still paused about 30-40% into supraland and planning on heading back the first chance I get

Current backlog that I actually want to deal with:

  • Yakuza Kiwami 2
  • FotS-kuza
  • Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
  • Destiny 2 Forsaken (don’t have, but can get)
  • Finishing Steins;Gate

What I am actualy doing with my time:

  • Fucking FFXIV, dammit.

You will probably be like me felix and get 40 minutes in and find it unbearable garbage.

I played it for maybe 10 hours last summer when I moved and had nothing else to play that didn’t require an Internet connection and it stays that way the whole time too

I think I quit and then had to scream into a pillow.

I have nothing to add at the moment other than

GOD BLESS THE RING

I always say this, but The Witness is a great game that you should walk away from the second you’ve had enough and never look back.

I have a… terrifying list of games I haven’t played and intend to get to eventually, but looking more short term I did at the start of the year make a list of ten games I’d try to get to during the course of 2019. I got through half of the list already which is a minor miracle, but the remaining five are:

  • Yakuza Kiwami
  • Super Mario 3d Land
  • Planescape: Torment
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Stephen’s Sausage Roll

Yakuza is almost certainly up next once I finish playing Bastion. Planescape is the one I’m least confident about but will probably give a shot during the summer, the rest will pop up whenever they do.

Just doing this about so many games has helped me in life immensely.

These days I think I tend to finish the games I like, unless they happen to be too long and burn me out before the finish line. Therefore, my to-do list of backburner games was mostly games I just didn’t care enough to finish, eg:

Bioshock Infinite,
Mass Effect 3,
Bravely Default,
Fantasy Life,
Shadows of the Damned,
Plus More…

About a month ago I traded them all in and never looked back

As a quick follow-up I started Yakuza Kiwami tonight so I actually am getting to the spring cleaning this go around. I’ve never played or even looked into any of these games before so I’m going in very blind and my main thought so far is that they’ve put a ton of effort into everyone’s skin texture.

  • Alien: Isolation - This was one of the first PS4 games I bought, but I still have never even inserted the disc. I will probably like it, unless it has annoying stealth sequences like Observer.
  • Dark Souls 2 - I’ve played through the original, but not the “Scholar” version. This will probably be what I pick up the next time I feel like revisiting a Souls game.
  • Disaster Report 4 - I don’t actually have a copy of this yet, but I sure hope it gets released in English.
  • Hellnight - I know very little about this game, but I once looked at the title screen.
  • Into the Breach - Will I actually try this game?
  • Shadow Tower - I’ve almost started playing this several times recently (on PS3). This may be the next video game I play after I’m done with Supraland.
  • Torment: Tides of Numenera - I bet I will enjoy this if I ever get around to trying it.

Need to get around to finishing:

  • Baba Is You - Got distracted, I guess, though I like this game a lot.
  • Cuphead - I’m still somewhere on the second island.
  • Earthbound - After finally getting this on the Wii U, I only played it for about 30 minutes.
  • Fatal Frame 1-3 - Played all three at least halfway though, I think. Never finished any and have not touched them in years.
  • Hypnospace Outlaw - I might just use a guide to get through the rest.
  • The Last Guardian - Inexcusable considering how long I looked forward to this game and how many consoles I bought primarily for it (2).
  • Prey - I stopped enjoying this as soon as I had to start fighting things, but I think I need to give it another chance.
  • Particle Fleet: Emergence - And Creeper World 2 as well, for that matter.
  • Resident Evil 7 - I’ve been waiting longer each time I put this down. I still unfairly judge it for not being Silent Hill, though the VR support is very nice.
  • Tametsi - Not sure I will actually finish this game. It’s difficult.
  • ZeroRanger - Never did get past that part with a random 3 of 6 possible sequences.

Thinking about revisiting:

  • Crystalis - Convenient now that I have the SNK 40th version.
  • Cubivore - Not so convenient, unless I can figure out how to play it on the Wii U.
  • R-Type Final - At this point the sequel will probably be out before I bother hooking up a PS2 again.

Considering, maybe:

  • Deracine
  • Nier
  • Nioh
  • Sekiro

Edit, two months later: I have now tried Hellnight and Shadow Tower, and will probably just end up watching videos of those games at some point rather than playing them. And most of the games I have played lately are not on the above list. I think Devotion will be next.

I made a fucking spread sheet. These are only the games I actually have access to, not games I want to have at some point.

I’m using priority A-C, sort it by that and lowest time commitment. I also mark down if it’s an ongoing commitment like Path of Exile or Tekken 7, games that you can almost play forever. The “when to play” column is just there to help me out a little with regards to DLC that will drop soon. If I don’t know the exact date I just make it the last of the month. I’m not actually crazy enough to think that I can plan this down to the day.

Don’t @ me about the priority of whatever game on the list, you don’t know if I haven’t already played it and just want to revisit it!

Have any of you had success working through backlogs in the past? I never managed. I usually just make a simple list and then leave it at that lol So yeah, I’m looking for pro strats here

Play each thing for an hour or half an hour and viciously cut it down. A huge Steam library can feel like a lot of sunk cost but so is wasting time. If it isn’t grabbing you and you don’t have a recommendation to go on, cut cut cut.

For the rest, go by mood. I alternate really kinesthetic action games with adventure/story/“TV” games.

I’ve been trying to simultaneously play two games of differing type so I can combat feelings of staleness midgame, though like @doolittle says I cut stuff off when I really have had enough. This has resulted in me playing a lot of games to about 80% completion lately without much regret.
