andddddddd longtime world record holder and route architect genius mizusima came back and beat it by almost 9 minutes. can’t overstate how difficult this is to do, probably the hardest turn-based rpg speedrun there is and this time is almost unthinkable.

The turnover in on-camera talent from last marathon is a real memento mori for me.
i appreciate that this thing still happens, and it was checking out a GDQ in 2014 or thereabouts that first inspired me to consider speedrunning, but i have considered the event to be largely unwatchable live for about 7-8 years. 2018 was the first year they went to subscriber-only chat* and i think, while i certainly don’t miss the nastiness that came along with said twitch chat, the “hyyyyype” was also immediately gone, replaced by increasingly corporate smoothing-over of anything interesting about the event
the scale also got to the point where it’s entirely a top-down thing now. runners and topical commentators are effectively interchangeable objects of donation generation; the “quick” part is definitely not remotely the point anymore.
* to be clear i don’t think this is the catalyst, just an important disconnect; one of a huge number of accumulated disconnections between the speedrunning community and the event since it started

tl;dr before 2018-ish it still felt like getting to do a run at GDQ was somehow the equivalent of getting to perform on the The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. in 2025 it feels more like getting an offer to perform on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

GDQ has always been intensely theatre-kid earnest and not the least bit punk, which isn’t a value judgment one way or the other but I think means their success was only ever going to look like this.
I appreciate, though, that they’re a large gaming community/media outfit with an ethos of relentless wholesomeness and decency.

yeah, i definitely the miss the first year(s?) where everyone was in mike uyama’s basement, but likewise i’m glad these are still happening and raising money for generally good charities despite my lack of interest in actually watching the last few years. i also think that the block programming has gotten very lackadaisical and arbitrary in a way that makes watching for any extended length feel pointless and disconnected. might as well just watch the vods when there aren’t even tenuous connections between the games being ran.

I definitely feel like I’ve outgrown the space. Nice to tune in through the week but I don’t feel connected in the same way anymore. And it’s not a measure of the production changing over time, they’re still goofy and doing great things with the donation drive; it’s purely me getting older.

it’s also annoying because whenever I find myself maybe wanting to tune into this it’s like 8 hours in a row of people playing joke games or an entire Final Fantasy because I’m busy at normal times

I watched back one of the runs and someone on the couch used the phrase “glazing him up” halfway through a sentence, and like……… normies do not know what that phrase actually means.
