Speedrun Colosseum: AGDQ '13 '23 started a couple hours ago. That’s all, I just wanted to call it that.

there is a new edizione of Quick Games gettin’ done starting next weekend, but just cannot come up with a snappy and witty title for that… yet.

in the mean time, pick&share your runs to consider:

Goemon 2
Pikmin 4 maybe?
Goof Troop
Sneak King
Gravity Rush :flushed:
Lies of P

and as usual, looking forward to the surprising runs that will be unearthed as we go along!

I got accepted into a smalltime speedrunning marathon next month:

We started running the game at about the same time earlier this year, and we’re roughly equivalent in skill, so hopefully this will be an entertaining race.

Oh man, that’s such a Millennialcore games lineup. Two Mega Man blocks! I love it.

in speedrunning, there is a concept known as “speedbullying”

it involves a dynamic between two players where one player, often one of the game’s “champions”, is more established/dominant/proven/etc. and another player is challenging them. the challenger may be actively grinding a category to surpass the dominant player, or may have just surprisingly taken a record from them.

the dominant player either sees that the challenger is playing “their” category or has just taken record, and rapidly improves or reclaims the relevant run. such acts can be massively demoralizing to the challenger depending on their disposition and the context.

the psychological warfare in speedrunning is fascinating.

i uh. also may have speedbullied someone

it’s not really speedbullying in this case. speedbullying would be if i, after having not played the game for 9 months, immediately came back and took the record after Ghillie beat me

anyway!

here are bunch of nutty speedruns that i enjoy. some recent masterpieces, some historic runs, just stuff that attracts me:

Celeste Any% in 24:58.023 by secureaccount

secureaccount is ONE MINUTE faster than second place. this is one of the most disgusting displays of dominance in a highly-optimized speedrun i’ve yet seen. unbelievable.

Bunker 1 Secret Agent in 0:19 by Rayan “PerfectAce” Isran

divine, perfection, impossible. shouldn’t exist. second place is 21 seconds. without some unthinkable, inconceivable new strategy, this run will never be beaten. it may never be tied.

Super Mario Bros. Any% in 4:54.631 by Niftski

this run literally ties the (“human theory”) TAS up until the last stage. literal perfection for most of the run. starting to think Niftski (the greatest SMB runner of all time, hands down) may be more machine than man…

Super Mario 64 Any% in 1:36:21 by Weegee

Weegee’s consistency is unreal. please enjoy this tour de force of a run. still among the most enjoyable categories for any speedrun to just watch. poetry in motion.

Wave Race 64 - Drake Lake in 1:10.996 by Illu

inspirational. Illu had to grind an exceptionally long time to get this time, a time optimized just about as well as any stage in any N64 game - a truly high bar.

Pilotwings 64 - Dark Cavern [100pts] in 34.85 by Graviton

no one will ever beat this. heat death comes first.

idk, isn’t that a bit similar to how, say, people approach competition in general?
When you start to creep up to your (current) skill level, you invariably start to get competitive and try to surpass the next goalpost, since we are somewhat conditioned to aim for the top, aren’t we?

Thing is, either you stop then and there, or one’s getting obsessed by getting #1, and then you are invariably set for being surpassed by someone who’s similarly obsessed… so in a way, if you are #2 or #3, and you see someone beating #1, it’s not as personal as being toppled, i guess.

Granted, as you mention, if you are insta-responding to someone besting your time, it feels a bit like someone’s being a pain in the a … especially if it is in response w/o any action for a while. Otoh, if you’ve reached a ceratin skill level, why invest much time to best it if you are well clear of the next one?

(Answer is, when my OCD comes through and i want to make good on each and every mistake i’ve made, i’ll probably feel fvkked when someone waltzes in and beats your performance, and in their best/my worst case without many attempts. Only serious speedrunning i’ve ever done was DKC with/against my brother, when we tried to go below the 1h threshold, and when my brother went below 1h, i stopped playing it (since the point was to see what Cranky would say, and that was that :servbotsalute: )

otoh, in my late 20/early 30ies i’ve discovered that i started to enjoy extracting the max from a given package and when i feel that i managed punching above my weight, e.g. a place just-below-50 can be worth more than a top 10 you get easily, if that makes sense :tarothink: )

definitely analogous to many things. the “statement” game in sports, for example. you still only win the one game, but the psychological ramifications of e.g. blowing out an opponent, or clipping on them with some outrageous play, can affect things beyond the game.

the specificity of this phenomenon, i think, has to do with the asynchronous, indefinite nature of speedrunning. any time someone stops playing a game, there’s a very real chance they will never speedrun the game again, let alone PB. they may not even continue paying attention to speedrunning at that point. it can feel like you start out solo-pursuing some (static) goal, then suddenly you are no longer shadowboxing. sleeping giants, etc. etc.

consider it this way: as the challenger, you’re looking up at some accomplishment. they did what they could - presumably - and you are trying to do what you can. but it turns out it wasn’t all they could do. they still had another gear to pull out.

of course, for some people, it’s really motivating rather than discouraging. i should also point out that i don’t think it’s like, immoral to speedbully. it can definitely feel kind of bad for the challenger but it’s not like a faux pas or anything
