speedrun thread

do normies watch agdq? cuz like glazed has penetrated gamer circles really hard these past couple years. it is very much normal discord/twitch slang

it’ll be banned next year

If my kids are any indication it’s just part of gen alpha brainrot slang like your skibidis and your rizzes and so forth

I’ll say a lot of stuff younger people are saying but I just won’t make myself talk about people “glazing” shit

If you’ve been in a discord channel with an anime meme channel you’re familiar with the phrase “glazing”. Its meaning may drift by region.

i have set many, many records in excitebike 64. significantly more than anyone else ever has, and i hold more than anyone else currently as well. it’s weird to think but i guess as things currently stand i am the “greatest of all time” at speedrunning excitebike 64. but anyway, this one, while almost certainly not that optimized and probably destined to be beaten before long, is probably my favorite just because doing desert in under 4 minutes didn’t seem to be possible and probably wasn’t without having been playing the game as long as i have.

idk it just feels like a good run to show off how absolutely incredible this game is.

that was fucking thrilling in it’s entirety

also does that desert go on forever like I thought it did when I was a kid or did I just have a big imagination

i need to test it! i’ve only been trying to go fast lol

i should caveat the above because i’m speaking from my own bias. there are three types of speedrun in this game, standard, shortcuts (uses exploits to cut corners), and skips (uses glitches to skip entire laps), and the skips runs and a decent few of the more technical shortcuts runs are dominated by another player. i am better at the "glitchless” category generally, which is “standard”. this course doesn’t have any shortcuts or skips (that we know of) so it is all just standard here.

anyway point being i should probably at least asterisk my goat status because ghillie is the shortcut and skips innovator and has discovered more new routing than anyone else, and they have all the skips records

there are functions that generate pseudorandom noise that are well-suited to terrain generation (e.g. perlin noise), and by tying the randomness of the noise to the game’s coordinate system it would be relatively trivial to create an infinite expanse that would only need to have the currently visible portion loaded while still being consistent if you revisited an area.

i have no special insight into what excitebike 64 does specifically, but i wouldn’t be surprised if there were no limits to the desert aside from whatever data types they use for coordinates.

this is essentially what i thought it was yeah. i remember riding in a single direction for about 10 minutes and never running out, but it also could have just been invisibly looping. it seems wild to me that an n64 game would essentially secretly have a random terrain generator so i just don’t know

maybe i should look it up

oh it’s on the fucking wikipedia page

The Desert Track was fractally generated for an endless desert, but despite the random building of its dunes, it also keeps the current configuration in the game’s memory, allowing the player to return to the same spot that they once left.

game rocks, i love excitebike 64 so much
