saw Sonic the Movie 3 the other day

my mother-in-law, who vibed well enough with the previous two films, found it to be utterly incomprehensible (her kids pogging at every single random reference probably didn’t help)

very silly film. i liked it.

i played sonic heroes

ok i played about 45% of sonic heroes and if i finish it, it wont be all at once, for reasons ill get into (tldwr its repetitive and not super fun to do)

i opted to do Team Rose’s campaign first, then i did about half of Team Sonic’s and a few levels of the other guys to get a sampler

Team Rose has the easiest, shortest levels which felt right for a sonic game that most people agree is too long and not very good. and yeah i didnt hate it!! its not great and definitely a step down from the Adventures but it was not a miserable slog either. i only disliked one “act” really (each pair of levels in this game is called an Act which is FUCKED UP) the 3rd one, which is the worst pinball level ive ever played in a series that includes sonic spinball look at this shit

youre so weirdly zoomed in and the movement is based on your vertical direction?? so like you can sorta direct yourself with the stick but the input keeps switching and you cant see where youre going and if you mistakenly switch characters it breaks half the time waaaugh. Nothing else was as bad as this though the rival battles came close

My actual biggest problem with this infamous clunker is its uhh too clunky. i get what they are going for with the teams, theyve been trying new ways to mix up the game styles for two games why not this, but they also consistently were best when you were doing Sonic levels and the character switching always just fucks with the flow of what could be perfectly fun Sonic levels. to not even do puzzles just repetitive, activities? Stop and switch to your punch guy so they can punch a thing or break a floor. Stop and get into your awkward flying formation to hop a few platforms (but dont run out of flight or your two companions will drag you straight down to your deaths, all forward momentum ceased). it never feels worth it

the combat is one of those repetitive activities but i at least sorta had fun learning how to break it. There are a couple bosses that are wave-based enemy fights (in a sonic game, yeah) and you can wreck everything by stunning/building meter with thunder shot (flight formation attack) then switching to power to smash stuff, then using your big cutscene special attack at the start of the next wave. Same more or less goes for the Eggman (OR IS IT???) fights. Bosses in this series have never been any great shakes so that i can form a strategy and beat these ones quickly kinda makes them hard to hate

Also your power characters moves are kinda fun in a lazy character action way, and their animations are very cute. i love when Big carries the girls + Cheese on his shoulders

the infamous repetitive character voices vary in how annoying vs funny i find them. i love Amy’s English VA in this era but really dont like Big’s or Cream’s voices unfortunately. They have a lot of conversations where i thought “you guys really dont have to talk just to talk”. Team Rose does kinda have the least in common besides “we’re the odd ones out and we’re nice” but i doubt the other teams dialogue fares much better. This game has a general problem with being overexplainy for kids. Also the characters on your team narrate tutorials/give hints instead of Omochao and it’s way less charming (Omochao is still around, they get the tutorial and menu explainers so i cant complain im getting enough of them but sigh yes i can)

Tails is SO BABY in this one!!! i think this was his youngest VA. i think its adorable
Knuckles’ effort grunts sounds like he’s saying SHIT…! ROCKED!! to me so i like that. Also he enunciates the team special attack “all ready!” like he’s outraged (“already?!”)
Omega’s voice clips are all very funny cuz its his flat yet angry robot voice its really good (pretty sure its the same VA as Gamma)
the Chaotix sound not quite exactly unlike how i imagined they would/should. i guess Charmy is fine. i struggle with the Chaotix ngl. Vector is kind of a fun design (his effort grunts in this are very annoying RAAARGH noises)

i wonder how much having all these characters was motivated by this being the first multiplatform Sonic. Meet our extensive cast of characters and get to know their 1 primary character trait over 14 levels x4

cuz oh yeah why im not rushing to get the final campaign is cuz you have to beat all the other ones like usual, but they use the same exact levels, just slightly longer (sometimes blatantly copy pasted) and with tougher bits from Rose → Sonic → Dark. i figured that would get old fast. Chaotix does at least have weird little mission objectives you have to follow. OH and you have to get all the Chaos Emeralds, which means you have to do the Special Stages which are fucking terrible lmao theyre like a remake of the Sonic 2 ones with awful physics and you only earn an emerald every other time you play one, wtf

I think the fact that im even considering it should tell u though this game really didnt fuck with me as much as i thought it would. Like i mostly just detailed stuff that isnt good about it but besides all that it was an alright sonic game with decent (if overlong) levels and per-usual banger music. Maybe it was low expectations, or maybe im just a sicko. i mean look just how much i fucking wrote about sonic heroes

and what im putting it down to play next

p.s. this has my least favorite crush40 theme but gaaahhh its such a fucking earworm

I think the Game Grumps failed playthrough of Heroes scarred me. Maybe Arin finished? It hurt to watch him suffer that bad.

heroes isn’t a good game, but it seems that trusting the opinions of oxygen thieves guys who play games badly on purpose because it’s supposed to be funny is a “stopped clock is right twice a day” situation.

Is there a source for that? Or just hearsay? Either way, a great story (maybe not for the single dev who suffered though)

sounds like a mismanaged fucking nightmare although egg fleet is probably the best level so he was cooking
