Sonic Mania

can’t believe i wasted time trying to clean up the audio on sonic movie 3 to extract the act clear jingle sound when of course there was already a mod for generations in approximately 1 second after release lol

If I could make someone a videogame mixtape to play, this would be the first “track”

(whispering) death chamber death chamber death chamber

in honor of sleepy’s recent sonic journey and in double-honor of my semi-recent play-through of the mainline sonic games last year, i think i wanna try to dig into the best fan games and hacks that will play well on my steam deck*. i got Sonic Galactic (which from the level i played is amazing) and Triple Trouble 16-bit, anything else i should try?

i think i can run Project 06, but tbh i’m not sure if i have the constitution for that, even if it is restored and optimized lol

*but before i start anything, i’m gonna play the sonic jam version of s3&K because it still has the old music unlike the Origins one i played last year

Origins is on Sale again until Feb 6. I’m still hung up on the Ice Cap Zone music, but I haven’t played Sonic 2 in the living room yet…

it is, i’m happy that it works on my steam deck after a little tinkering. i heard about this years back and never had a computer to play it on. i have more fun messing around in this proof of concept than i did all of Sonic Frontiers

The movie production used puppets. We need the puppet cut

Stuff I noticed playing the 16-bit Sonic games in Origins Plus, which maybe we already covered:

  • I’m pretty sure I got a lot more crushing deaths than usual throughout. Physics are slightly different, but I’d have to watch a YouTube video for specifics.
  • Lives are replaced by coins that are shared across games. You can spend them to retry failed special stages, so I got Super/Hyper Sonic pretty quickly in every game except CD, which I still don’t know how to play.
  • The Sonic 2 special stages are smoothed out like they are in Sonic 2 Absolute. The Sonic 1 special stages seem off, which I guess is a physics thing.
  • Some games don’t let you smack the boss early anymore, which is a bad choice.
  • They added characters and moves to older games, but not features like elemental shields. Character selection is inconsistent: you can play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, but you can only play as certain combinations in certain games. I don’t think you can co-op Sonic 1 or Sonic CD at all (unless there’s a debug code) and I noticed you could play as Amy and Tails in one game and Knuckles and Tails in another, but not vice versa.
  • You can stop and continue the older games that did not have saves files before, but you don’t get the full Sonic 3 & Knuckles file select experience in them, which you do in Forever and Absolute.
  • Aside from Ice Cap, the new music isn’t too much of a downgrade.

I played the first level of each game, then the second, and so on, until there were only Sonic 3 & Knuckles levels left. I learned that the laser Robotnik shoots from the giant mech at the end of S3&K does not hurt you if you have the lightning shield. I also learned there are ~8 giant rings in Mushroom Hill.

:drudgesiren: warning big fuckin post ahead

i completed the Final Story of sonic adventure 2
like the first adventure the game i was mostly enjoying kinda shit the bed in the last campaign
the multi character section is cool in theory but each bit had a lot of bullshit deaths for me and i had to quit and unlock an upgrade for Knuckles that i’d skipped cuz it turns out his segment is mostly timed swimming puzzles ggaaaahh
then the BioLizard felt impossible to avoid damage on until i checked a video guide and learned youre supposed to dodge roll some of his attacks like its fucking dark souls

HOWEVER: FinalHazard was super easy and more importantly fucking hype
Sonic Team learned from the mistake of Perfect Chaos: once you get the Super Sonic/Shadow powerup scene set to the title theme, just let the player have that moment
im obviously predisposed for the moment to work on me and i knew it was coming but man. would have been my everything at age 12, still thought it was fuckin cool at 34

(isnt it a little silly though that the 2 candidates for The Ultimate Lifeform are 1. Shadow the Hedgehog™ and 2. a mutant space dinosaur)

i slightly prefer the first one for being weirder, funnier on accident, and more ambitious. i liked that Sonic’s campaign was sorta the main game and the other ones were a bunch of snack size extra modes starring his friends reusing the same levels with different rules. sa2 is a better game in many ways, taking the concepts from 1 that had the most juice and giving them more development; its a credit that it cuts the gameplay type in 1/2 while maintaining the character count and mostly avoids getting too repetitive. it juuust started to by the end of Dark Story though. in service of making each character role move the story (…mostly) it loses something to gain something i dont find as fun. Big the cat fishing would have been a nice way to break up the monotony
(i like all his cameos i spotted at least 3)

i will say i liked the story a lot! i thought it was pretty good! its at exactly the right place for a Sonic story: fun n silly with a sincere melodramatic side that comes out of it in the end. kinda cheesy but kinda cool. The first game has a surprisingly thoughtful story on paper, but you have to give it some imaginative buy-in cuz the model rigging & cutscene shot composition aint getting you there alone. 2 is much better animated. you can look at these animals when they talk now!! i played thru with the Japanese audio partly for this reason; the English voice direction is barely extant as it was in the first game, but there it fit the awkward visuals. i can nominally take these critters seriously, sl i want voices that dont jar with that. (i like JP Sonic’s vocal tic of enthusiastic English phrases)
i actually love the models in this game, its some of my favorite renderings of these characters. Rouge’s cute lil bat fangies are never more prominent!

Sonic/Shadow levels were the GOAT kinda like Sonics were in the first gam. i never played these 3D games partly due to my impression that theyre a bit jank and broken, even these more beloved ones, but they really kinda made strong bones for a decent 3D take on Sonic on their first real try. its pretty simple – quick running/grinding/loop de loop setpiece whoa cooool, short scrap with a chain of enemies to bounce to the next spring, repeat. in other words its 2D Sonic, but with even more zazz. the movement got tweaked just so that some of my issues with controlling Sonic in the first game are alleviated, i think just about all their levels are hella replayable.
except the ones with gravity bullshit. though i kinda liked those ones cuz antigravity/switching gravity is such a classic Sonic thing and it was uhh, daring to try in 3D. (even used the same warp signposts as in sonic 3&k’s Death Egg Zone!) (also its fun to say Sonic’s version like an old prospector. look at that CRAZY GADGET!!! (zone))

its funny how little grinding is utilized for how much its advertised (Soaps!!). until Sonic’s final level where its nothing BUT grinding and you have to learn how to do it right lol. (protip: let go of the stick and hold B on the straightaways. do NOT touch the stick unless youre quick-switching rails)
Shadow’s levels use it a bit more, but then his finale is the antigravity level
also, he too is in the game less than the advertising would make you think – only gets 4 levels and Eggman is positioned as the protagonist of Dark Story. makes sense since hes the puppetmaster theyd want to keep him enigmatic even to the player

i was dreading the treasure hunts in both games, but i never found them that bad?? Knuckles’s missions are small n breezy in the first one, i enjoyed climbing and gliding around and reconsidering familiar stages. The change so youf radar only detects 1 emerald is a stupid one, and some of Knuckles’ are a little too big, and the hip hop songs are extremely funny and obviously written from 1 day of watching gameplay footage (GIVE UP THE EMERALD OR DIE I DONT LOVE YOU!!!) but loop too quickly for how long you gotta hear them. But once i figured out the hint system i managed to slow myself down and enjoy them. plus its easy enough to find an excel spreadsheet with all the clues/answers hehehe

Rouge’s levels were imo a lil stronger. theyre mostly smaller i think? and use some novel gimmicks like the Egg Quarter having light stealth, or the vault level you gotta crack in 5 minutes. that was a fun one to learn and basically speedrun. Also Rouge is just fun and cool and her music slaps. i think “Fly in the Freedom” is my favorite character image song

knuckles is even more superfluous to this story than last time. its such an exvuse to just have him around, like hes the one who breaks the fuckin emerald this time and its not even key to Eggman’s (master) plan (he is the Eggman, that’s what he am). he joins the rest of the crew literally by popping out of a manhole and going “oh hey guys i got lost in the sewers lol”. every time it cuts to him its like “Meanwhile, Knuckles was off in God know’s where doing some other shit”
its pretty funny tbh but, not beating the least interesting character allegations knux

Sonic sez ACAB

the weak link is the Tails/Eggman mech stages. but like, theyre fine. Theyre ok! not a grim death march, just kinda boring. it was a mistake to make the mechs so ponderous – what makes Gamma’s stages work is how breezy they are. the 2-button lock-on shooting gallery gameplay just isnt complex enough to be engaging for long at that speed. since, again, Eggman is the protagonist of Dark Story, you feel like are in his mech a lot more than youre doing cool Shadow stuff… cuz you are.

it is cool to get to play Dr Eggman though and play through him kicking off his scheme (his first level is chronologjcally the first “scene” of the story). his JP voice has a very distinct, fun evil laugh that he does whenever you get a high scoring chain. Guy’s havin a good time. he also gets the most fun shooting level for his finale where you fly up thru Sonic’s Final Rush and blast everything in low-G. real chill where Tails has the worst fiddliest mech fknale

i would be remiss if i didnt comment on Tails’s adorable little mech!! (which i own a LEGO model of  )i knew he had one but i never picked up that it mode shifts from the Cyclone! also i fucking love that there is a level where Miles “Tails” Prower flips cop cars and blows up military drones. i love that the true villain of this game is the military-industrial complex

i like the sa1 version of “Believe in Myself” better. but i like the sa2 version of “It Doesnt Matter” the best. i like that Tails theme sounds closer to Sonics now that hes his own cool hero with his name in the paper and everything! my boy!! hopefully it cushions the blow to his ego a little after Eggman completely roasts his ass with like a Looney Toons verbal sleight of hand

in conclusion: great game, had a good time for 90% of it, but i never figured out how to raise chao. its nothing against them i think theyre really cute. i just couldnt puzzle it out and didnt want to invest the time learnng. i love Omochao. thanks for reading my long story. i love u Omochao

don’t know which side you chose first but be sure to check out the lil preview for the other side if you haven’t seen it. (most people pick hero first and never see the hero preview)

I think it really really depends on luck. My most recent playthrough one of the emeralds didn’t spawn and (i know this doesn’t sound right) I spent half an hour searching for it. When I finally gave up and restarted I found all 3 within 90 seconds.

No that sounds right. it took me almost a half hour to beat Pumpkin Hill lol (and that was just on my last attempt!) i had a couple instances where i died and it rerolled and the next randomized piece was easier to find (and thankfully never had the opposite happen to me)

Also Knuckles’ final level sucks because it constantly bombards him with meteors, however it and Rouge’s final level do some Super Mario Galaxy shit 6 years earlier, running around on planetoids with their own gravity and launching to/from via rockets. kinda neat!

ebit

Thats fuckin cool detail… i did go Hero->Dark too its weird that its optional. Dark isnt harder per se but it doesnt teach the game as evenly
