i have to talk about the gorgeous, cute, funny animated cutscenes in origins plus oh hey look i talked about them. theyre really nice takes on the sonic cd intro style (the Platonic Sonic) tho obviously done in a more silly uhh western style cartoon way (i hope u take my meaning, its not qualitative)
speaking of sonic cd is so weird & i love it lol. I will always love it cuz its my first sonic hedghog game but it really is such a funny lil alternate timeline sonic the hedgehog 2. the weird jump noise. the weird spindash (& “super peel-out”). the time travel mechanic & how frustrating it can be to wrangle. the level design feels like it’s fucking with you even more than usual in a sonic game, you get bounced around and trapped and set back constantly (fuck wacky workbench zone!)
im grateful this version lets you just play as Tails right away instead of making you unlock him like the original Whitehead port release. he or Knuckles feel better suited for the really vertical level design & how methodical they want you to be to get all good futures. i love that good future Robotnik’s mechs are a beautiful lavender-pink, looks good on him
also you can play Amy which supposes an alternate story where she decides to impress Sonic by saving Little Planet before he shows up! the new intro before the title screen (the classic one still plays on a new game start, no matter who you’re playing as) shows her using her tarot cards to try to divine Sonic’s moves like in the JP manual! she’s adorable!!
in conclusion,
god this was the coolest shit id ever seen when i was 8 and it still is
(i know “you can do anything” has shooters and i love it too, i love both soundtracks really, but “sonic boom” is the one that lives in my heart & that ive memorized the lyrics to & sing along with…)
Finally got around to watching SAGE 2024. So many games! I got a list of about 13 games to try. Noticed the GBC Luigi game is a no-show this year so maybe that one was done.
Big theme this year was Sonic Battle-likes. There were six of them. I get delight imagining the trashy drama between six-indie projects making the same thing based off an extant thing.
Think the Taxi game was the one I am most excited to play.
There are two new What If Sonic but on Saturn.
Remain convinced making a Sonic level is the hardest challenge in level design. The community’s commitment to recreating one specifc Sonic game’s janky physics because their childhood must be preserved.
Finally got all the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic Mania and Sonic A.I.R over the holiday break. I looked up the Giant Ring locations for both. I still prefer the 50 rings + Star Post method of entry in Sonic 2.
The UFO stages in Mania are much more forgiving than I realized while the Blue Spheres stages in 3/K are… still a bit annoying.
I have yet to play the last level in Mania because I collected 'em all with Knuckles and nobody cares about that guy.
Got those precious gems with Sonic and Tails in separate files and started working through Encore mode. I am unclear as to when exactly I became Sonic-pilled, but Mania and the Genesis remakes are the only single-player games I’ve been playing lately.
I was getting a little excited about the Donkey Kong Country re-release until I actually had to use a continue in Encore and remembered what it’s like to have to replay entire levels when you don’t really want to.
i completed sonic forces wowie rudie wasn’t kidding it’s short. It has 30 levels but a lot of them are less than 2 minutes long!
It was okay with some bits i liked a whole lot. the Rookie is obviously the best part but i only got to play as her every 3 missions! classic Sonic feels superfluous. and also, bad, kinetically. i havent played generations but i have to guess its better than his levels here. i would rather more levels with MY mary sue in the spotlight thanks
fr i do love how much they make your OC the hero and rescue Sonic the Hedgehog™ and he calls u cool and you basically get to take Tails role while he uhh tags along behind classic Sonic and is really emotional to see him go back to 2D land??
the story is the biggest letdown tbh i didnt expect anything great but its supposed to be more “serious” and doesnt even go for it? its just a normal beat eggman adventure except everyone is acting like a resistance fighter & doing codec calls every 5 seconds. Like i dont want to see a story about Sonics PTSD from his months of torture but try something? play it off with a joke about how his torture was not running maybe. the worst effect seems to be that all of his quips are extra dopey & phoned in
the best part of the story is Infinite because he is perfectly an edgy villain OC to match your heroic OC. the Shadow DLC tells you his backstory is literally he was some jerk who got his ass kicked by Shadow the Hedgehog™ and lost his shit. he goes out like a real chump lol
ive decided city escape is one of the alltime fuckin best videogame levels
i keep replaying it to like speedrun & do the streetboarding part perfectly & just style on it like its a THPS level
…it took me far too long to realize u can replay levels with other missions
i like that Sonic begins the game on the run from cops & the military cuz he was framed (kinda, its more like the cops & military were racist) but can then do a lot of vehicular manslaughter on San Francisco if hes not careful while escaping from it
