Sonic Mania

It had very strong Master System vibes, yes.

this framing has made me interested in the game, now

pretty early in, i already knew i shouldn’t have paid full price but also this is about what i expected

the emerald powers aren’t very snappy and i already forget that they’re there but there is some replay-ability and once i got going there is a kind of “zone out and vibe” thing going on for me. earlier comparisons to Master System games and even stuff like newer Yoshi games feel valid

if the music was better it would be Mostly Fine but it truly is notable when the music is like Bad Bad in these games

Absolutely abysmal.

Like hearing a UFO Catcher through a wall.

like the game itself is alright but this music is really making the whole experience feel like some kind of other universe B- PS1 game

i will probably never play sonic superstars and if i do i will probably not like it at all but this tune is kind of neat. it’s weird and i like it

fang the sniper miniseries announced, taking place between sonic the fighters and sonic superstars. i’m mostly impressed that they’ve bothered to make the timeline so comprehensive

I was hoping this would be a nice co-op rental for the weekend, but the camera shifts between players in a weird way and the level design doesn’t seem great. Meanwhile Mario Wonder is pretty fun.

I still might finish a playthrough though. It kinda feels like Sonic and nothing’s been hard enough to stop me from coasting through. It reminds me of 3D side-scrolling Kirby games in a way, but maybe that’s just because the levels are connected by a map of doors like in Kirby’s Adventure. Or maybe it’s because it’s boring?

I think the best thing I can say about it is that I’d be interested in a demake.

if this game came out right after Generations or Forces, it would be heralded as a nostalgic return to form for Sonic Team. hell if it came out even like a couple years ago i think it would feel a little more substantial. but coming out the same week as one of the most interesting and well-made Mario games of recent memory, likely the best 2D one since World, is not just bad luck but comically terrible timing.

the actual “”good”” sonic gameplay momentum is there, the UX is stellar and the graphical aesthetics (like a cute looking PSP game) are on point. while the music is kinda ok at best, it’s still to me evocative of like late 90s cd rom platformers or Sonic PC game menu music or something like that.

but like something just feels bleh about the whole thing and i can’t quite articulate why yet. this is Sonic’s Mega Man 8 to me. i should like this more than i actually do

i still haven’t played the co op yet, i would like to but then again, why would i when Mario Wonder is right there

It’s okay, the Sonic Frontiers DLC is out. There are still some who know how to make a game starring colorful critters.

Was always disappointed in Sonic Mega Mix when I got to the revamped Spring Yard Zone and the background announced RUN BITCH .

Will probably try this at least.

Gosh, is this the best Sonic fan game because it certainly looks like it.

The Studio that animated the Night of the Werehog short from Sonic Unleashed brought back those ghosts in a new Halloween short.

the music in this game sounds like a 2000’s korean MMO, in a bad way
