Sonic Frontiers Thread (Hérissons Sans Frontières) [Sonic 06: The Trailer: The Game: Of The Wild]

the environments fill in as you do more in each area so by the end there are obstacles all over. I’m not sure why they’ve rarely shown a filled-in area in prerelease media

triggered one of the slot machine events and got 300 fishing coins

So based on 50 fishing attempts.

Items needed to unlock levels, emeralds and story events are expensive and capped at 1 or 2 each. Items to level speed/rings have a high cap but are cheap and attack/defense may be capped but not yet.

But most importantly there are Dr Robotnik audio logs in Big the Cats store. These are the most expensive item. Every item can be bought for 1 Golden card so use any and all cards for these important lore items.

I fished out 31 unique items from the first spot - 100% of those available.

This equalled 20 levels each in attack and defence and 14 between speed and rings.

This sounds very sonic adventure 1 weird and that seems cool

I’m very happy that the rock tracks have self-serious post-hardcore vocals yet somehow aren’t even close to the cheesiest music in the game

an hour or two in and this game is great

huh

tangle and sticks just being plopped into game continuity with offhand mentions is extremely weird but neat

the IDW stuff is real good

the idw sonic comics and the recent frontiers prologue cartoon show that sega are rinally aware of what kind of stories sonic fans (both kids and adults!) want. it’s actually amazing that the netflix sonic show is the least cool current sonic thing and even that looks okay.
also they’re fantasy-action-adventure stories set in a world without money or formal government, which is pretty inspirational tbh

it’s hard to avoid hyperbole but I think this is my favorite 3D sonic game even setting aside the writing and music

it feels silly to claim it’s innovative but I’m having tons of fun just moving through one of these little sandbox open zones chaining together sections of obstacles. I loved just running through saints row 4 like this and sonic feels much better

the islands nail the feeling of the ruins in sonic adventure and bring a distinctly sonic identity to the otherwise cliche post-post-apocalypse setting

the open zone design is definitely not open “world” per se — it’s a bit like a destiny destination or forza horizon map. lots of little diversions that you can seamlessly pick up and put down

the minigames are indeed hilarious and bizarre but they’re also tuned very well to avoid frustration

the pop-in is a shame but it keeps everything running perfectly and that’s my only technical issue at all on xbox

I haven’t wanted a direct sequel to a 3D sonic game until now. they don’t need to go back to the drawing board

forza horizon’s open world is a really good reference point.
it’s such a smart design for sonic, these games never really click as there is usually too much of a wall to momentum, but all these scattered small playgrounds are over so quick it’s just nailing a handful of jumps and you never really run into that issue.

this does also come with the horizon issue of idk what all these currencies are, but ultimately i think i prefer that to recent flat nintendo design that just gives the same reward for every challenge

I think I’ve got them all sorted in my head?

  • defeat minibosses to get gears → clear cyberspace stages to get vault keys → open emerald vaults to progress to the island boss

  • memory tokens from around the open zone for story progress

  • purple coins for big (who has his own completely contained shop economy for the fishing minigame)

  • strength/defense containers and koko for speed/rings (trivialized by the big shop)

the genius page got updated with all of the vocal themes. fairly certain quinnie is the first sonic artist feature to be reviewed in pitchfork lol

@doolittle’s praise has me contemplating making stupid decisions involving paying too much for a computer game to try to recapture some feelings I had back in '99.

is there any reason i would prioritise upgrading rings? you get a boost for having max, so why would i make that harder?

worth noting on all of this, i had £20 of xbox vouchers, so this was a £30 game to me. that’s the right sort of price for this cavia feeling sonic imo

fwiw, i went all in ans plunged down the cash for this and WRC Generations, not that this helps you in any way, but you can think of some random stranger that bought two of them at full price to make you feel less stupid if you plunge down the cash for Sonic F

rings determine how long you can stay in super sonic mode but I didn’t run out of time on any of the bosses

agreed. nothing wrong with waiting on a sale if you’re cost conscious. incidentally, the PC version uses denuvo
