Simple 2000 Series Vol. 81- The King of Fighters XV

AOF3 is so weird and cool. Every stage is a different part of this tiny town that gives it a roadtrip feel. Characters get buffs if the Neo Geo clock is set to their birthdays. Nobody should have done that but they did it anyway.

Damn, that’s a good team sigil. I am really liking the various new team configurations–one might have expected Antonov to team up with Sylvie and Mian–which would have been a weird/interesting Rugal parallel–but this also makes a ton of sense.

Some stuff leaked out ahead of the Gamescom trailer next week. This is going to be good.

yesssss

Trailer in the first 10 minutes of this stream. 39 characters (but 52 slots on the character select screen?). February 17, 2022.

52 is roughly in line with XIV right?

rollback

KOF14 launched with 50 characters and 4 DLC characters, and then an additional 4 characters that came later. The trailer for KOF14 announced 39 characters with 52 character slots (17 teams and 1 single entry). The trailer mentions two DLC teams, which is still only 6 characters and brings the total “announced” characters to 45. So I dunno what’s going with their advertising vs the character select screen.

With KOF14 they mentioned the move to 3D allowed them to make more elaborate character designs, so I guess they’re just pushing farther in that direction. I’m curious to see what other new characters are in here and what they look like.

The pared-down base roster has big KOF XI vibes, and I am here for it. I don’t expect the seven remaining slots (nine minus Heidern and Braids) to all go to brand-new characters, which suggests that XIV was in some ways compensating for the previous two games’ sameyness, rather than setting up a new (unsustainable) norm. And heck, I can respect that: I like that SNK can alternate between being conservative and throwing caution to the wind and adding every character they can think of–it keeps the series interesting.

It was pretty revealing to me just how much SNK were stretching themselves to manage KoFXIV’s massive launch roster when I read a quote about how Kukri and Mian were specifically designed so that they wouldn’t have to animate their faces.
