Where are you now, slightly-older stranger with whom I played through all of Virtua Cop in a movie theater lobby?

Anyway, an idea:

A tower defense game wherein you have an avatar thatā€™s on the playing field. This has been done. But! In this game, itā€™s you and not a base the baddies are after, so they chase you around. And you must evade the baddies while trying to lead them past your towers so they get chewed up by the crossfire (while trying not to get iced yourself?)

Could see this playing out a lot of ways. Maybe itā€™s co-op, but one player sets up the towers and tries to guide the free-roaming player over comms, directing them where to go in order to best evade/lure the enemy.

Or maybe all the turrets etc., are manned by players! And the entire player team loses if the free-roamer gets killed by either the baddies or by friendly fire.

All I know is, the free-roamer probably does parkour.

A collaborative information based MMO.

Information about how the world works, and literally any action you can perform in game would be transmissible via observation of the action and scrolls/books. Scrolls are gathered and organized in central libraries that would act like wikis of sorts. Information must be hand delivered. Skills could become lost or misplaced if a character were to die on the way. Not returning a library lent scroll puts you on a list for bounty hunters who will hunt you down in exchange for your late fee.
Selling scrolls to the library is always some% over market and lent back out at the standard rate preventing rampant information hoarding. Known lost or unrecorded scrolls could receive a bounty. So if you want to know how to bake bread at a campfire and the only scrolls the library has lets you bake bread in an oven you can just put a bounty on that potential scroll. And then someone would receive a bounty for figuring it out and maybe another bounty for delivering it to you.

Once you use the scroll X times you can learn that action and can pass it on, or sell it or what ever. Performing or seeing performed an action enough times allows you to ā€œlevel it upā€ and would allow you to write a better version of the scroll so people can learn from it. Writing a scroll about your skill gains you XP the same way that using the skill does but without risk or the need for using materials other than parchment. Teaching a skill levels you up even faster and has secondary positive effects like learning faster teaching methods. The more ways you interact with a skill the faster you make it better.

Id want the skill system to include action, object, target, location in free combination. Shooting switches with a slingshot from a horse could be an entire skill if you do it the required number of times and ā€œwrite it downā€ in a scroll. Though if you shot a switch with a sling shot on foot you could remove the ā€œon a horseā€ modifier and have it work in both ā€œlocationsā€. Shooting switches with a bow would allow you to broaden the skill to any kind of shooting. If you submit a scroll to central that is more specific than one they already have they may reject it.

Iā€™d include hunger mechanics so food crafting, selling, guarding and transport could be a whole thing and limit the spread of society and prevent lone wolves.

Wounding and fighting capacity would replace HP. Once you are bleeding or poisoned you may need help before its fatal. Getting bruised up or seriously hurt and then mended would just make you weak for a time, fixable with rest and potions. Fighting capacity would increase with repeated near death experiences.

Id have permadeath but with a re-spawn option where you can start with 75% of the memorized skills you died with as non-transferable scrolls. If you raise children you can use them as re-spawn accounts and as ways to practice you skills through teaching.

Jet Set Willy 64, and by that I mean a hack of Super Mario 64 that makes it more British.

almost, but their character designs are too appealing and sanitized. conker was unsanitized but still remains fundamentally too appealing ā€” i need a grotesque caricature of of a middle-aged man drunkenly vomiting into a toilet, not some silly cartoon varmint

what would the game part be like?

I earnestly searched for some mario 64 rom hack grotesquerie but couldnā€™t find anything that fit the bill.

Pizza Time 64 is the closest i found:

spartan x + sonic + motorcross maniacs

Canā€™t believe they havenā€™t made a Naruto Run endless runner or something. Seems like it would print money just from people playing it ā€œfor the memeā€ as it were

extremely earnest isometric 2D medieval fantasy action RPG and when you beat the game the credits theme is an original Travis Scott production because the team far exceeded their kickstarter goal but had already made most the game

that is 100% the best case scenario for a kickstarter wildly overshooting a goal

that should be the law

specifically you have to pay travis scott for an original credits song

A game all about being a combat mechanic for mecha. Cut, weld, disassemble, reassemble, and do it with precision and speed, because they need to get back into the fight as soon as possible. Triage mode missions need you to exercise your judgement too- can you repair this mech in time for the fight, or is it too damaged to bother with? Youā€™re the chief mechanic, itā€™s your call.

Rlly into a derivative idea I have for a table top skirmish wargame about competing
adventuring parties of the olde schoole D&D, Dungeon Fantasy type racing to do more adventuring faster. Also there are black powder weapons.
