Yeah I didn’t either til now tbh! I’m going with the original Japanese speed though because hey why not. I feel like english gamers were already complaining about it being too harsh even in our version so I’m interested to see how strict this can be.
Still have strong memories of going into a cave, every battle being a boss battle, getting to the end fighting the easy as hell actual Boss, and there being no treasure. Then running away from every battle outwards and dying before I could get to town and heal.
Real SaGa Hours.
Yeah this is my main memory, except I think the boss killed me every time. It was like a giant crab or something right?
After reading of Tuxedo playing Saga Minstrel Song on Switch, I have decided to do the same and it is gorgeous.
Even if production values are not super high, and the remaster has been upscaled with AI, I really like PS2 3D spaces. In I have put almost 20 hours in my first game (I am taking my time). The game had its own peculiarities and comexities related to event progression, some quests can be done only within a range of event ranks, and the ranking (including monster power) proceeds along with the party’s experience, until it caps at end game ranking.
Right now I am trying to wrap up as many quests as I can at (I am at maximum event ranking).
Classes, upgrades, completed quests and other stuff can be carried to NG+, and there are a total of 8 protagonist to be completed, so they are going to be faster.
I might be at a hard stop with Saga Minstrel Song! I have breezed through the Trials of Elore, done the last Dungeon, beaten each of the three Saruin’s minions (taken alone), but now those three are teaming up and arenway too strong. I have mowed through the dungeon enemies to level up butnnow they are not appearing anymore, and the three minions are still kicking my butt. I cannot leave the final dungeon either, so I am stuck. Is there a strategy to beat them? Are they specially weak to something?
I have read that, if I had not beaten all of them (taken singularly) earlier, then they wouldn’t be all three together (but only one/two of them), but now it’s s too late. I suspect that this fight is eve worse than the final one.
Yeah I only had two enemies there and got through this fight with half the team dead, but still beat the final boss first try. Think this might be unsalvageable with no alt save, sorry
SaGa has always been cruel / careless about this, with the exception of Scarlet Grace
I managed to find an older save. I killed only one of the three minions, and at the gateway only one showed up, so I destroyed it.
Then I went ahead to fight Saruin, but he was too strong and I lost.
So, I decided to kill a second minion, and at the gateway no more minions showed up anymore. This tricked me into killing also the final minions, and then! At the gateway, the three minions appeared together again! This time, I had no spare saves, so I was ready to uninstall the game… and instead, I killed them at first try. For some reasons, one of their moves were doing very low damage to my Valkyrie (Sif), but I dont understand why, I didnt change equipment.
Anyway, I went ahead, and I managed to beat Saruin after about 10-15 tries. It was an epic fight!
NOW, THOUGH, A QUESTION: I have started NG+ with another character, decided to retain everything (apart from the monster level). Shouldn’t this mean that the quests that I finished should be marked as completed? Because this does not seem to be the case, I am getting the same quests again…
nah as far as i know it’s just levels, techs + spells learned and non-key items that cross over on ng+ in any of these games
in the original ps2 release there’s a bunch of stuff (including quests and recruitable characters) that is exclusive to ng+
congrats on finishing, minstrel song doesn’t fuck around
This new Minstrel Song remake lets you carry a bit more stuff than the original like stats + monster rank
But it’s still a new game so the event rank goes back to 1 and the missions are resets. You can still probably go to Saruin in like 1 hour by picking very fast event speed, carrying over everything and beating a few monsters in the plains but the universe will consider you have done 0 quests
You can check the quests you’ve done in a previous playthrough by going to the quest menu
I really enjoyed Minstrel Song, although I am not sure if I will go through all 8 characters, after some point it might get repetitive.
I’d really like to play Saga Frontier 2 after this one. I think it looks gorgeous and even weirder.
I had started it, but I went away scared because I had the impression that it was very difficult (more so than this one, at least as first impression), and also a bit different, I didn’t grasp the duel logic very well.
If you guys played it, can you give me a short briefing? ![]()
Also, which is your favourite Saga as of now?
And how would you rank The Last Remnant vs the other Saga?
scarlet grace, initially bounced off it but couldn’t stop playing when it clicked
the final boss theme is a banger and all
I need to revisit SaGa Frontier 2, I remember it as nightmarishly hostile but that might just be because it was one my first SaGas
It is initially not that hard, I could get to the end without having a firm grasp on its underlying mechanisms. But it gets very difficult towards the end (south moundtop… the final boss…) and always closes its doors behind your back such that you never feel « safe » and always have to move forward
Extremely cool visuals and story structure, the bad translation really hurts it though
I really like all the games in the series including Last Remnant. Picking a favorite is impossible, it’d be like a toss up between FFL1/Romancing 2/Frontier 1/Unlimited/Scarlet Grace? It seems like you caught the SaGa bug so might as well try anything you can get your hands on
I might have to revisit Scarlet Grace at some point. I also bounced off it (maybe because it looked almost like a card game) but I might give it another chance.
I have only played through the first on Gameboy but I love it dearly. I had started the second and I think it could be even better, but I never got too far.
it’s a game worth dreaming about
oh hell yeah
