The mish mash of concepts gives off SaGa Frontier 1 vibes.

Man the only SaGa game not on Switch will be Unlimited, maybe the coolest one

I tried the Emerald Beyond Demo on PS4 and it’s as slow as the Switch one. Performance really took a hit compared to Scarlet Grace. Every SaGa game on new consoles has baked in fast forward andI guess, as a new release, Emerald Beyond doesn’t have it, which may contribute to the sluggish feeling

Battles feel very simplified compared to SG which is probably good for everyone but me who spent like 100 hours on SG. SG really was too ruthless from the beginning but I completely got used to it

There’s a much bigger emphasis on story but it still feels like reading a photo-novel so if the game keeps having that much plot I’m expecting it will be fun for a while, then deeply annoying, then fun again after I’ve undergone a long mental journey to accept it

Plot is bonkers with both Switch and Playstation demo protagonists but I’m going to wait for the full release as I want to start with the Bonnie Blair & Formina Franklyn duo

I’ll enjoy it but this might not be GOTY, shockingly

Saga Frontier 2 was on the Nvidia leak however many years ago, so it’s been in development for a while. I’m really looking for to that, but I also really want this SaGa gravy train to last up to the Unlimited SaGa remake because I am extremely curious what they would do with such a thing.

PC demo feels alright but the battles could be snappier and less claustrophobic. I didn’t finish it but the story was pretty goofy it made me laugh I kinda envy it

they got a trailer with a scottish singing robot girl. you’re not fooling me, saga! I know if I try to play you she’ll never talk and then she’ll randomly disappear because I didn’t learn the right skill on the third moon of the 19th cycle and then all of my attacks will miss because I didn’t douse my blade in the blood of the unforgotten king

Her voice doesn’t disappear at least…

The PC version definitely runs better than the Switch version, but it is still possibly playable on the Switch.

I haven’t played Scarlet Grace in forever but am I imagining it or is there way more going on in combat in Emerald Beyond? Like, how many of these timeline based special mechanics were there before? It’s very cool.

Scarlet Grace also had timeline manipulation (and counters / interrupts / block)

From what I’ve seen Emerald Beyond added a new form of unite attacks but removed another, trickier one.

OK two days later I now tolerate the game having mediocre UX and am now back to unreasonable froth

Thread going full circle

The Romancing SaGa 2 remake demo is out. It runs really well on Switch. The remake got so much more money than the new title in the series released earlier this year

This definitely feels like it’s coming from the Square enix remake factory. The dungeons are extremely modern Squeenix now, DQ11-like, and feel safer. The characters could fit in the new Manas. They got the little Octopath black square weakness indicators too. The battle system doesn’t seem to have any special gimmick. I’m sure the termites will be much less horrifying. Random progression is gone and you get HP/MP/weapon type bar filling after battle until they level up. Feels weird!

Admittedly SaGa was getting into a narrower and narrower niche before this one

I’ve been a fake saga fan for too long. I have never put a serious effort towards finishing RS2. But now that changes. The RS2 remake demo made me want to give the original RS2 a fair shot (well okay I’m playing that ugly looking remaster with the phone ui but close enough)

Getting towards the end of the game, managed to get Coppelia as my Empress by dealing with Dantarg with her in my party. I think I’ve screwed up my save, random encounters are brutal right now, but I’m having a blast. I beat Dantarg by making everyone but Coppelia invisible and spamming guard and healing until dantarg ran out of SP and couldn’t do any more attacks. I love SaGa games.

I managed to beat Minstrel Song last night. The final boss was expectedly difficult although didn’t require quite as much extra preparation as RS2 and 3 did for me, besides going on a big detour to get myself the Moonstone. The ending funnily enough seemed to prominently feature a bunch of characters I’d barely interacted with as though they were super important.

Now I’m simultaneously feeling both exhausted with it and like I want more.

I’m torn as to whether I like this or Frontier best on my SaGa rankings.

I’m a bit intrigued by the RS2 remake, but I am really not a fan of them swapping out Tomomi Kobayashi’s artstyle for generic Falcom characters. Might have to wait for a sale.

Yeah its really bad

What they did to Coppelia’s design is a crime

Yeah that was probably the most egregious one I saw. Everything eventually has to converge into pop idol / maid singularity
