RESIDENT EVIL....

That hasn’t even made it to 9 years yet!

both of those games are horrible explains something about the question, but says nothing about why people seem to think RE4 is hard to play or not fun and needs an update. People will say that but if they just got over themselves they’d probably realize how silly a thing it is to say.

Clunky is such a frustrating word. RE4 provides a little bit of friction because you have to choose between moving or attacking, and people interpret that as like a deficiency caused by the poor technology of the gamecube.

I did like the demo even though it’s predictably worse than the original. I’m a sucker for this gameplay. I’ll take more of it even if it’s a lesser variation of what already exists. There’s still the tension of a crowd closing in on you and do you take one last shot and try to stagger someone or do you run. That has me hooked.

I know it won’t be as good as RE4 but I’m really hoping it reaches the quality of RE2R. If they can’t match the quality of the police station with their RE4 remake then they probably never will. I also want a Mr. X surprise enemy that subverts the existing gameplay. Maybe a dumpster mimic that eats Ashley.

I am optimistic too because of this, as it is really the draw of RE4 (and even RE5) for me. It bodes well for me that there is so much melee interaction. I suspect a knife with durability will make more sense in the context of the rest of the game too.

Damn. I’m predicting something here… that a lot of RE4 oldheads will reappraise RE5 if they end up disappointed with this remake. I’ve been saying it forever, to crowds of people who dismiss that game, but it’s got maybe just as good as a game feel as RE4 does. It’s easier to notice this if you play the game on a high difficulty in co-op, but harder to notice in single player and on easier difficulties too. Very arcady: tense, and fast.

my 2c: RE5 is kind of a horrible game tbh, but RE5 mercenaries is excellent.

RE6 is even more terrible than 5, but is also the mechanical apotheosis of the action-oriented RE games. mercenaries is kind of weak despite this, though. not enough enemies on the default mode, and the PC-exclusive extra enemies mode fucks with the balance

both are improved in co-op and at higher difficulties

no that game is irredeemably racist lmao

Sadly, I don’t think most people who don’t like RE5 don’t like it because it’s racist. Prepare yourself.

re4 remake has analog movement when the original has digital and fixed movement in a way that defines it to me… this is true… im honestly just so excited to play a triple a action game that is japanese and not a soulslike or character action thingy tbh tho lol

i’m aware racism has a lot of fans, thanks

My biggest beef with RE5 is not being able to upgrade to the hydra shotgun in a single playthrough but yes; plays well on Professional difficulty, co-op remains both cheese & bacon and has the best Mercenaries mode

this is why they better not remake re5 cuz we will have to litigate it being racist again like its 2008 because people have the memories of goldfish, like if your going to remake that shit just drop the fuckin africa setting for the love of god. it doesnt even add anything to the game, its not like they actually give a shit who chris’ co-op partner is, and you REALLY dont need to get people thinking about chapter 3 of that game again in modern days. it really doesnt need a remake!!! if i was capcom i would be trying to get people to never think about that game again instead of threatening to force everyone to think about it again

Please Capcom remake RE0 instead and bring back all the giant insect and animal enemies that have been tragically absent from the series :scorpion:

Literally. just remake RE0 and actually put fucking item boxes in it instead of that tedious shit where your hauling items all over the fucking place and it would actually be a worthwhile improvement!!!

but also these cowards took out the GIANT SPIDERS from re2 and re3 so they dont like good enemies ANYWAY

Withholding the giant spiders so that when they remake these games a second time they’ll still have something to offer fans

if for some reason they remake RE5 they have to just ditch, idk, most of the game and lean really hard into punching boulders and shooting wesker in the face with a rocket launcher

it’s further unneeded evidence of how unserious video games journalism is. the most deeply incurious, historically illiterate and shallow thinkers imaginable. they look at the tone of re 4 solely through a lens of cultural chauvinism and think anything more americanized is automatically an improvement. likewise, they think anything that is more mechanically homogeneous to current design trends is also an improvement. it’s just sad.

Not Americanist, presentist. Without a sense of history or any desire to understand it. Absolutely what we should expect when 95% of the writers are gone by 3 years in.

When one of you finishes this can you pls tell me if: Separate Ways is in the game (betting it’s not) and if they reduce Ada’s part in the story. I need to know for my Gail Simone style list of slights against the female protagonists of this series

absolutely fair. i forgot how much water is and was held for david cage’s work which is some of the most profoundly embarrassing attempts at “elevating” narrative in video games.

Certainly there’s a lot of narrow taste but games media always had a big proportion of weebs compared to general population; it’s certainly where I picked it up and now half those guys are living in Japan.

I was surprised to find out that there are fewer western game developers who play Japanese games than press. It’s gotta be something of a holdover from the PC/console split, but tastes at a big studio are only a standard deviation more niche than the US audience. You can see it in how the Game Developer’s Choice Awards and DICE awards were a few years behind press awards in recognizing that Souls games were a thing, to say nothing of trickling its lessons into design.
